Old world meets new world traditions: Sonny's

Sister restaurant to Local 188, Sonny's plans to have a different focus.

For those who know and love Local 188, you will be please to hear that Jay Vellani has a new venture. With Local bringing ten years of service- pairing fine drinks with Old World cuisine, Sonny's is prepared to bring in the New World, with a Central South American influence.

Previously a bank and most recently the space of O'Naturals in Portland, Sonny's has moved into 83 Exchange Street without skipping a beat. The transformation of the space is warm with gold and wood tones, the old vaults now house wine and the kitchen remains open. A large bar invites you for a cocktail with a special touch, the back room beckons for privacy and a few small sitting areas offer the chance to relax next to the tall windows.

Having only been open a month, it's hard to really classify the clientele thus far. Caitlyn King, the floor manager, describes a mix of business class and local artists and musicians. The staff adds to the clientele with loyal regulars.

An extensive beer selection includes Sierra Nevada ($4), Brooklyn Lager, Long Trail IPA, Unibroue Terrible ($8) on draft and South Hampton Double White ($4.50), Spring Peeper ($9), Coal Porter, Stone Ruination ($7), Pacifico, Red Stripe and Modelo Especial are among the bottled varieties.

Taking pride in pairing wines with dinner, Sonny's carries some impressive titles, ask your server for Grayson Cabernet ($7/28) Sincerely Sauvignon Blanc, McManis ($8/32) or a bottle of Weinert '04 for $39.

With the same style of cooking as Local, but with South American Flavor, Sonny's uses local sources, organic foods and humane meat choices. Chances are you have already heard the raves on the Yam fires ($4) but the Acarage (resembles a black bean and shrimp fritter) for $10 is a nice place to start. It's cold outside so try the Pozole Rojo (chicken stew) for $9 or the Mariscada Del Noche, a portion large enough for two, filled with scallops, mussels and clams.

While Sonny's is still working out the kinks and opportunities of a new restaurant, look forward to some gallery shows and possibly some music by Summer. The patio will be open, as the permit is in place and they are likely to feature a late night menu.
