Strawberries on sale at Farmers' Market

Strawberries

The big news at today's farmers' market is the appearance of those tasty harbingers of summer: Strawberries! A couple farm stands are selling them for $6 a quart, and the taste is pure heaven.

Strawberries

In addition to the berries, the market is overflowing with lots of good eats, including all manner of greens such as kale, Swiss chard, bok choy, beet greens, arugula and lots and lots of lettuce. You also can pick up seedlings and flowers, plus things like baby turnips, radishes, eggs, pork, honey, jams, maple syrup, olive oil and those greenhouse tomatoes from Olivia's Garden.

Angela Adams market bags

And should you need a stylish tote to carry all your market goodies home, then swing by this table and pick up a fun Angela Adams' canvas bag. It's a locally-made bag up to the task of handling Maine's finest farm fresh food.

The Wednesday Portland Farmers' Market goes until 2 pm in Monument Square. If you miss it, head over to Deering Oaks Park on Saturday from 7 am -noon.

Steve, sorry to hear you're not a fan of the farmers' market. Fortunately, many Portlanders realize the value of this market as evidenced by the crowds and the Soul of Portland Indie Biz award that residents recently voted to bestow upon the Portland Farmers' Market.

Should you have ideas for things you'd like to see me cover with this blog, please drop me an email.

We get it, Avery, you're a vegan.

Hey Avery - don't misunderstand, I'm actually a fan of the Farmers' Market, esp. the Saturday one in Deering Oaks. It's just that your blog is a little, well, predictable ... far too much emphasis on the vegan/"foodie" scene in Portland ... I mean, there's more to this great city than that, no? I would challenge you to find something DIFFERENT to blog about on Wednesdays rather than what is simply convenient (that Farmers Market is a stone's throw away from your offices) and in line with your interests ... what about something that may interest the rest of us?

Maybe you could blog about how the comments section on MaineToday.com doesn't seem to work very well ... :)

Steve, this blog is a snapshot of what goes on in my world, I'm sorry it's not of interest to you. We have a number of other blogs on our site. If you haven't checked them out already, I encourage you to do so as you might find something that better suits your interests.

I apologize too for this site's antiquated blogging tools/commenting system. We're hopeful the new owners are going to upgrade all of this.

Sorry, my mistake, I thought the blog description said something about "all the hottest happenings in Portland" ... maybe it should say "all the things of interest to Avery Yale Kamila" ... that way the description would be a little more accurate. Just a thought.
