I concur, I concur! I always cringe with the whole 'alter ego' bit. There's no 'by day... by night'- we are athletes & business women, madly in love with an aggressive sport- 24hours a day, 7 days a week.

My skate name is not far from my birth name and is a nickname that I had for over a decade before joining derby. Thank you for bringing this important subject to light. The whole alter-ego bit only further perpetuates the notion that women are suppose to act in certain manner and/or that those bad girls who play Roller Derby are merely fulfilling some titillating fantasy. That's not why I play the sport. That's not why I exist.

I don't know about an alter ego, but roller derby has taught me the self discipline I was seeking when I thought I might join the military over a decade ago. Needless to say, I would never have made it in the army, but I have excelled beyond my own expectations despite using another name as part of this incredible sport.

I don't know. Nico would put a skate in her cheating ex-boyfriends' face. Genéa won't let her. Maybe it's not an alter ego, per se, but a side of me I tame a little to get along in society. Or to curb assault charges.
