My alter ego

I've never subscribed to the alter ego. I'm me and nothing will change that.

Most press coverage about roller derby is the teacher-by-day-hellion-by-night type crap. And the alter ego is played up heavily with interviews about how a woman creates a derby handle and becomes some sort of crazed, violent, machete-chopping berzerker.

I like big butts

And I cannot lie. Truth is my butt is pretty big and that works in my favor in roller derby. And I'm not the only one who feels that way. Cindy Lop-her of Charm City Roller Girls, devotes a site called Big Derby Girls Don't Cry, "dedicated to challenge the misconceptions of women and size."

Here come the Janes!

Tomorrow is the debut of MRD's Calamity Janes! The entire league is thrilled to see these ladies roll out and take on Providence's Killah Bees! With the exception of a few skaters, this bout will be the first for most of the Janes. And that's a big deal.

There's no crying in derby!

I know my injury is minor compared to many, and that I just have a couple more weeks to go before I can skate again. And while I'm nervous that I'll lose endurance and muscle memory, I know that's unlikely since I'm still working out off skates.

My three seconds of fame

Blockers get very little glory. I'm not complaining - it's just a fact. People watch jammers. They cheer for them. Usually it's the jammer who receives Most Valuable Player.
