Get the Scoop on the Spring Bouts - Season Preview

2009 is a big year for Maine Roller Derby. The Port Authorities and the Calamity Janes are ready to kick it up a notch and take on more challenging teams than ever before. We really mean that - we're still relative newcomers to the roller derby community, and the only way our teams will grow and develop is by challenging ourselves and learning from our games no matter what the scoreboard reads at the final buzzer. Keep reading for the scoop on the top-notch and highly-ranked teams meeting us in the Expo this spring.

Roller Derby is Coming

It's finally that time again. That's right, bout season approaches. The time of year when my life is more than just mostly dominated by roller derby, it's entirely subsumed by eat, sleep, work, practice, cross-train, promote, blog, Twitter, press release, invite, plan, flier, design…and on, not necessarily in that order.

The Thrill of the Spectator

This coming Saturday, I'm thrilled to get to be a spectator, of sorts, for my favorite team # Maine's "B" team the Calamity Janes. These are my leaguemates and my friends whom I spend every epic three-hour practice with, and much of my non-practice time as well. I'm so excited for their third bout where they'll take on the brand new team from New Hampshire Roller Derby (NHRD).

Maine's all-star team, the Port Authorities, have a bout on Saturday of this weekend. I play for the Authorities, so this is game week for me. Bouts are the sweet whipped-cream-and-cherry on top of the giant roller derby sundaes that are filled with training and league-work and meetings and events and suffering through minor injuries and more training. Finally, we get to get out there and play a game in front of a crowd! It's so gratifying…and nerve-wracking.

Most of those reading this have probably been to a roller derby bout by this point - and if not, what are you waiting for? If you've been to a bout, you have some idea of how the game works. You also know what gets the crowd excited. Namely big hits, bodies hitting the floor, and jammer successes. That's the sweet, creamy filling of the game. Who doesn't love that stuff? And yet roller derby is a complex sport that goes way beyond the awesome brute force of contact...
