It's Art Walk and everything's free
Anytime it's a First Friday Art Walk night is a good time to leave your wallet at home. And since it comes around once a month in Portland, that means you can fill one out of every four Fridays with three hours of entertainment (5-8 pm) that won't cost you a thing.
All you have to do is pick a block or two along Congress Street, the Arts District or maybe the East End and savor the creative talents of other Portlanders. If you pick well enough, you can also savor some free wine and cheese and crackers along the way.

Friday: Let's do our freebie tour on Congress Street this month, starting at the June Fitzpatrick Gallery at MECA (522 Congress). Currently up is "Black & White with a touch of Red," 40 pieces including drawings, paintings, prints and photographs by 10 artists.
Next stop is SPACE Gallery (538 Congress). If drawings and paintings don't do it for you, maybe you'll get a kick out of "One/Another," a video installation by Deborah Wing-Sproul and Ling-Wen Tsai. If videos don't do it for you, check out "Studio Walls," a show from nine locals.
Just two more stops tonight - don't want to wear you out with a full weekend yet to come - and the next is at Gleason Fine Art (545 Congress). There's a real manly kind of show hanging here, featuring oil paintings of Fords, Chevys and Dodges by Kevin Beers.
And last stop: The White Heart (551 Congress). Up on the walls are the print works of Hephzibah Williams. And you're bound to find at least one beverage on the menu that keeps you under your $5 budget for the night.
Saturday: Turn your daytime into your nighttime today with a free wine tasting. LeRouz Kitchen's hosting one from 1-3 pm at its 161 Commercial St. location. As long as you're 21 or over, you can take part in the selection of Australian wines they'll be sampling. On the menu are Yard Dog's white (2006) and red (2006), The Red One's 2008 Cab-based blend, Raw Power's 2006 shiraz and Razor's Edge unwooded chardonnay (2006). After all your sipping, if the weather's good, take a stroll along Commercial Street and take in the sights. People-watching is free every day of the year.
Sunday: Crap! Another weekend's almost over. But you don't have to go quietly into another work week. You can fill your Sunday with music, fashion or psychic phenomena.

It's Psychic Sunday at the Clarion Hotel (1230 Congress) from 11 am-4 pm and it costs just $3 to get in and browse around. Chat up the people who can see into the future or paw through some of the products they're selling. Of course it's extra for readings or walking out with a new Magic 8 Ball.
There will be some sweet sounds coming from North Star Music Cafe (225 Congress) today. Mainstream jazz starts at 1:30. Have a cuppa something and enjoy.
If you can't get enough of Project Runway, you can't miss the Class of 2009 Fashion Show at South Portland High. The catwalk will be busy beginning at 4 pm and the price to see all the styles is pretty reasonable at $5. Even better, the money's going to a good cause - Project Graduation.
Enjoy your weekend - while you're watching your pennies.
