Weekend music & drinks - wicked cheap

Another weekend's almost here - time to plan where you'll have some beer. And even when you're working on a low budget there are plenty of options for having a good time.

This just in thanks to jchristie on Twitter: If you don't already have plans for tonight head on over to the Great Lost Bear (340 Forest Ave., Portland) for the International Stout Bout. From 5-9 pm you can pick from 12 stouts on tap - Guinness, O'Hara's Celtic Stout, Beamish, Murphy's, Sinha Stout, Gritty's Black Fly, Bare Knuckle Stout, Long Trail Coffee Stout, Sebago Lake Trout and Rogue Chocolate Stout - for just $2.50. Think of it as a little appetizer to help you make it through to Friday's main course.

And when Friday does arrive, we've got weekend tunes on the schedule. If you want to get out of town for the night, head up to Bucks Naked BBQ and Juke Joint (568 Rte.1, Freeport). The Jerks of Grass are playing a 9 pm show and they'll be rocking the house downstairs with their brand of local bluegrass. Far as I can tell, it's free to get in, but bring some change for the pool table.

If you'd rather stay in the city, check out the 9:30 pm freebie show by The Streaking Healys at Bull Feeney's (375 Fore St., Portland). It's a little prelude for St. Paddy's day, when you'll probably be lucky just to get in the day at the popular Irish eatery.

Saturday night's also filled with music, but you can add in some tough chicks, too. If you missed Friday's Bull Feeney's show you can catch The Streaking Healys at Joshua's Tavern (123 Maine St.) in Brunswick free of charge. Show starts at 9 pm. Or skip down to 94 Maine St. in Brunswick and pop into MJ's Grille and Tavern for the 10 pm show with Sidecar Radio and Highway Jackson (pictured). The cover's just $5 and you'll likely hear some of the tune's from Highway Jackson's just-released CD "The Dirty Bar Campaign."

Need more than tunes? Want entertainment for your $5? Then you better be at Bubba's Sulky Lounge (92 Portland St., Portland) for the Lucky Lass Throwdown with Maine Roller Derby. Music will be provided by djrocket.one and the derby gals will get the crowd hooting and hollering with their annual leg wrestling antics. The party starts at 9 pm and a good time will definitely be had by all.

Your best option for Sunday may be to hang at home with hoops on the TV so you can catch the final college teams who'll punch their tickets for March Madness. Or if you're ready to do some of that spring cleaning you can trot up to St. Lawrence Arts Center (76 Congress St., Portland) for the free Clothing Swap from 1-4 pm. Acceptable trades are men's, women's and kids clothing, accessories, shoes and bags. You can leave the underwear at home.

And if neither basketball nor someone else's used Chuck Taylors do it for you, take a drive to Brunswick to visit the highly-respected Bowdoin College Museum of Art. Currently up in the Becker Gallery is the show "Curating Across the Disciplines: The Frontier," which offers representations of the American landscape in the age of expansion. There are plenty of other works to see as well from 1-5 pm. And it's all free, though the museum does accept donations.
