Eat, drink & wear the green
If ever there's a Monday night to stay in, this is it. You need your rest. You need to detox. You need to fast for an evening. 'Cause tomorrow could be wild - and because it's Irish law that you have to eat corned beef or bangers and mash on March 17, you may have to break the budget.
There are 3 places you have to visit on St. Patrick's Day: Bull Feeney's, Ri Ra and Brian Boru. All three will have all day and all night celebrations, including drink specials, plenty of Guinness and live music you can sing, dance and stomp your feet to. The music, from full on Irish bands to bagpipers, is free for the listening. The Guinness is not. But if you add in your $5 allowance from Monday you can drink yourself at least a couple of those frothy drafts. And if funds are particularly low, there is no better day/night to hang out on a downtown Portland street corner and watch the crazies go by. Free entertainment that'll make you laugh harder than even Bob Marley.
If you refuse to get into the Irish spirit, it may be a good night to drop in on the Jazz Series at One Longfellow Square in Portland. Gary Whittner's on stage at 8 pm and cover's just $5. But I bet you'll see plenty of people wearing green there.
For those who just can't get enough of the St. Pat's fun (and who don't wake with a throbbing head), the celebration continues Wednesday at Blue. Irish trio Boghat will be playing at 7:30 pm and you can donate what you'd like for the chance to listen. There's also music at Slainte starting at 8 when Don Dumont hosts the weekly open mic acoustic show. The price? Nada.
No ears for music tonight? No problem. Soak up your share of friend-impressing trivia at the free author reading and book signing at USM's Glickman Library in Portland. It may sound like a pretty dull way to spend a Wednesday, but Wendy Chapkis' book sounds intriguing: "Dying to Get High: Marijuana as Medicine."
Thursday's the night to get your groove on. One Longfellow Square is hosting "Baile," an intro to Latin dancing. Instruction is from 8-8:45 pm and open dancing follows. Considering the kind of moves you can leave with it's bargain priced at $5.
If even that low, low price is too much for you, make the quick trek over to Black Cherry Provisions (56 Depot Rd.) in Falmouth for the store's monthly wine tasting from 5-7 pm. You can sip and browse for free and if you've ever wondered what a black cherry tree looks like there's one right outside the store.
