Monday, Monday: And Tue-Thur, too!
It's not fair that Monday's here already. But like good little workers we'll push on through another week - or at least until happy hour arrives today.
Monday's as good a time as any to get off the peninsula, so how about heading to Anthony's Martini Bar at Espo's Tratorria (318 Allen Ave., Portland). According to Bar Guide reviewer Amber Olesen this spot offers Bud Light drafts for just $1.50. You can slug down three and still stay within your $5 budget - and really, three should be your limit on a weeknight anyway.
If you want a little entertainment with your brew, skip one street over and grab a table at Shack's Pub (1192 Forest Ave, Portland) for Trivia Monday. You can play for free (but it would be nice if you at least bought a Mountain Dew).
For Tuesday you can stick downtown for your cheap stuff to do. North Star Music Cafe (225 Congress St., Portland) opens the mic tonight at 7 pm for the Port Veritas spoken word series. Sign up and say your peace for just a $2 donation. Or just hang and listen to what your fellow Portlanders have to say.
I'd be doing you all wrong if I didn't once again suggest you check out the Nickelodeon's (1 Temple St., Portland) Super Tuesday offer. This week you can choose between newcomers "Duplicity" (check out the trailer) at 6:50 pm, or "Che" (trailer)at 7 pm. And if you still haven't seen "Slumdog Millionaire" it's playing at 7:10. And remember, tickets to all shows on Tuesdays are just $5.
On Wednesday you can choose between student art and amateur music. The art's at the ICA at Maine College of Art on Congress Street. The show is the BFA Senior Exhibition and it's up through April 24. See what the kids are up to, then cross the street for a brew at The White Heart.
If you're feeling the music in you, you've got to get to Run of the Mill Public House and Brewery in Saco (110 Main St.) tonight for Seize the Mic, a statewide karaoke contest. You can pay $5 to show off your pipes or sit in the audience and do your best Simon Cowell for free. The music - if you can call it that - starts at 8 pm.
Thursday may usually be the night you head out to get a head start on your weekend, but I'm thinking you may want to go a little mellow this week. The regional semifinals of the NCAA men's basketball tournament start at 8 pm and Port City Sports Bar at Yankee Lanes (Riverside St., Portland) is a great place to watch. There's a 144-inch HD projection screen and more than 30 other TVs. And the popcorn's free.
If you're not a fan - Seriously? You're really not? - maybe you're into getting some exercise of your own. Portland Trails does a great job keeping its territories ship-shape, so take advantage of spring and the extended daylight with a walk along Baxter Boulevard. You'll see plenty to keep you entertained along the way.
