This week, it's almost all about the music

If you're like me, you went through a childhood phase during which you knew you had the talent to be a drummer. At one point I thought for sure I could be one of the Go Gos. Monday's as good a day as any to travel back down your drumming memory lane with a visit to Thornton Academy (438 Main St., Saco) where Different Drummers Drum Circle will be putting on a free show at 7:30 pm. DDDC is a group of drummers, musicians and poets and they'll perform with current and former Martin Steingesser students. Find out more at the group's website.

There's no telling how long the good weather will last. We could wake any morning this week and feel the need to pull the gloves back out of storage for the morning commute. But the weatherpeople tell us today's supposed to be gorgeous, so how's about getting outside? Get yourself over to Mackworth Island, which is connected to Falmouth by a causeway, and take a tour around the 1.25-mile trail. You may see birds. You may see wildlife. You will see water. And you'll get a little exercise - which never hurt anyone.

In the mood for a little rap? You can get a lot of it Tuesday night at SPACE when Our Accents Sure Are Pretty makes a stop in Portland. The 18-plus show starts at 9:30 pm and it's just $5 to get in. Rappers from around the world - including Thesis Sahib, Jamesphoney & James Reindeer, Pierre and Motionless, Zoen Funken and Roma - take the stage to share their alternative rap music.

If you're looking for something a little more mellow, head over to One Longfellow Square instead for the 8 pm weekly jazz series show with Gary Wittner. It's only $5 to listen there also.

And if you'd like to get educated, you can visit the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church (810 Main St.) for the 6 pm viewing of "For The Bible Tells Me So." It's a very timely documentary about five Christian families and how they deal with having gay children. The movie's free.

Make sure you keep Wednesday evening free because there's free theater to be seen. And that doesn't happen very often. Take advantage of Good Theater's staged reading of "George Washington Slept Here" at 7 pm at St. Lawrence Arts Center. Reservations are recommended.

Or maybe you're tired of just sitting and watching other people have all the fun. If you actually want to take part in the action check out Maine Ballroom's Argentine Tango practice from 8-9:30 pm. It's just $5 to participate, but it would be nice if you had at least a little bit of tango rhythm.

Of course Thursday has music, too. It's open mic night at North Star Music Cafe with the Maine Songwriters Association. Signup starts at 7 pm and some MSA members will entertain until it's your turn to get up and do your thing at 9:30 pm.

And music's always best if you're making it yourself but you sound sort of like your favorite band. Bucks Naked BBQ lets you play Rock Band for free in the Juke Joint every Thursday from 8-11 pm. Wanna show off your best Steven Tyler? Get yourself up to Freeport.
