To the '80s and the market this weekend

Those days are back Friday with A Night from the '80s at the Deering Grange in Portland from 6-9 pm. Admission's just $5 to see local student bands join with The Awesome and DJ Todd the Rocket to take their tunes back in time. Go ahead, break out the stirrup pants and grab a can of Aqua Net to puff up the hair. More info at maineacademyofmodernmusic.org.

If hip hop's more your thing, head over to Una Wine Bar to catch the free tunes spun by DJ Steady. He's the new Friday night resident and he starts the music at 9:30 pm for the 21+ crowd. Una's also offering a drink deal from 10-11 pm - $5 cocktails of your choice.

There's also art to be seen tonight if you don't mind driving a bit south to Biddeford. It's ArtWalk night in that city from 5-8 pm. Get to the North Dam Mill to browse some of the shows and also take part in Latin dancing lessons from Emma Holder. For other venues check out www.biddefordartwalk.com.

Expect me to say this several times between now and Labor Day: If you don't check out the Farmer's Market at Deering Oaks on Saturday you are missing out. Big time. Word from Avery Kamila is that the veggies are starting to appear - look for tomatoes, radishes, lettuce and more. The great thing about the market for those of us on a budget is that you don't actually have to buy anything. Just walking around, talking to the vendors, smelling the flowers and checking out the entertainment - musical and otherwise - can keep you busy for hours. The Saturday market's open 7 am-noon.

Speaking of flowers, if you happen to be in the Falmouth area on Saturday stop in at Sunny Acre Farm at 165 Middle Rd. for the 8th annual Garden & Artisan Show. See handcrafted birdhouses, twig products and garden furniture or pick up some perennials or a hanging basket. The show goes from 9 am-4 pm.

Ever heard of hurling? Me neither. Wiki defines it as "an outdoor team sport of ancient Gaelic origin played with sticks called hurls and a ball called a sliotar. The game, played primarily in Ireland, has prehistoric origins and is thought to be the world's fastest field team sport in terms of game play." And it's coming to Cape Elizabeth today when the Portland club takes on the Barley House Wolves out of Concord, NH at Fort WIlliams Park at 2 pm. Don't expect any Sea Dog Biscuits, but do expect plenty of action on a field with a backdrop that's the Atlantic Ocean. If you don't quite get the game at least you can enjoy the views.

Sunday is a day T-shirts and sailboats. First, the sailing. Or, make that the free sailing. SailMaine is ready to start its season and the organization is offering up free rides at its headquarters at the east end of Commercial Street. Get a ride from 11 am-3 pm or just hang by the water and learn how to tie knots.

For the T-shirts you'll have to drive to Freeport to see the exhibit From Rebel to De Rigeur - The 40-Year History of the T-Shirt at the Town Hall. There's a panel discussion from 3-4 pm or just browse the display, which takes the tee from undergarment to haute couture. A $5 donation is suggested.

If neither of those options do it for you on a and hopefully sunny Sunday, how about grabbing a good book, a hot dog from one of Portland's many vendors and a spot in a park and making it a lazy afternoon?
