This week: Safe Passage and pets
Start you week off by doing some good for people in need. Safe Passage is a great program that's earned plenty of local support for the work it does for children and families in Guatemala. on Monday night you have a chance to help out and have some fun while you're doing it. Pan Fried Steel will be providing the tunes from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Griswold Quad at North Yarmouth Academy on Main Street in Yarmouth where you can move to the beats. Can you think of anything better to do on a Monday night that only costs $2?

If you're feeling the love for the four-footed friends you can show it at the Kennebunk Free Library tonight at 6 pm. It's the annual pet show and a local vet will be on hand to dole out awards like Best Tail Wagger and Best Lounger. It's free to bring your pet but they must be either leashed or caged at all times. Sign up by 5 pm today. Every pet must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesday's big draw is the Portland Music Federation mixer at Port City Music Hall. If you're in the tunes biz, get out to talk music and make connections from 6-9 pm. The event is free (21+) and drinks are just $3. You don't have to be a PMF member to join the socializing, but you should bring some biz cards, flyers and/or CDs.
If you'd rather just relax and listen to music rather than schmooze your way into a possible record deal, One Longfellow's your Tuesday spot. The jazz series rolls on tonight and this week Ellen O'Brien is up from Massachusetts to show off her big voice. Pay just $5 to hear her starting at 8 pm.
Ferry prices may be a little steep for those of us on a $5-and-under entertainment budget but that doesn't mean you can't get out to an island. Spend your Wednesday eve checking out Mackworth Island off Rte 1 in Falmouth. You can stroll (or run if you have to) on roads, paths or near the water's edge. And it's free of charge.
Do you love "Survivor"? Then of course you love all things Bob Crowley - and that includes a good BC story. Maine's Survivor will be in the spotlight tonight, but he'll have to share it somewhat with his carpool pal, David Ladd. Ladd wrote a bio on Bob called "Making Waves: The Stories of Maine's Bob Crowley" and the star of the book will be talking about it and signing copies at Nonesuch Books in SoPo at 7 pm. It's free to attend but the book will cost ya.
When Thursday rolls around so do the Summer Sounds at Brian Boru. Every week while the warm weather lasts you can enjoy the tune of the Butter Bros starting at 9 pm while you sip $3 Coronas and Magic Hat brews. There's never a cover.
Thursdays are also the evenings for Thirsty time at The Porthole from 5-7 pm. WBLM will be there every week for a live remote and the restaurant offers free apps and specials on Shipyard and Bob Marley's Upta Camp beer. Sounds like a good way to work your way into Friday.
