Monday's here, have a can of beer - or do pilates

Hard to believe another Monday is here already. So why is it that the work week isn't just two days long, allowing for a five-day weekend? Not that I don't love my job, Mr. Boss Man, but a few more days for fun would be much appreciated.

As we wade deeper into summer the coolio events keep piling up. This week'd Monday choices start with 4:01 pm pilates with the flash mob, courtesy of Springboard Pilates. If you don't know where the mob is meeting it's because you still haven't signed up for the email alerts. Best get on that by emailing Meredith at meredith@springboardpilates.com.

After you've sweated and showered your mind should be ready for a workout of its own. Check out Trivia Night at Slainte, hosted by Jimmy Davine. Get ready for random acts of brilliance starting at 8 pm.

And if all that physical and mental exercise has you working up a thirst, remember that Geary's Summer drafts can be had for just $2.75 per at Three Dollar Dewey's. Belly up to the bat between 9 pm and midnight to wet your whistle.

If you're super savvy you can be entertained for lunch and dinner on Tuesday. Get away from your desk at lunch time, grab a sandwich and head to Post Office Park for belly dancing with Ayperi and friends from noon-1 pm. It's one of the city's free summer shows and you could learn some moves to help you shed that chicken salad wrap.

At 5:30 pm today you'd be smart to be at Bull Moose in Portland for the in-store performance by Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia. It's you chance to see the musicians up close and personal in a free show. Wild applause accompanied by cheerleader pom poms is appreciated.

Round about 7 pm you can make your way to North Star Music Cafe for the Tuesday spoken word session with Port Veritas. Join in or sit back and have a listen. You'll likely be asked for a small donation whichever you do.

Finally tonight, any Abby Road fans should grab a seat at One Longfellow Square for the continuing summer jazz series. The Steve Grover Quintet will be doing its tribute to the Beatles starting at 8 pm. It's just $5 to hang with John, Paul, George, Ringo and Steve.

What to do on Wednesday? The options are numerous but I'm suggestion you check out The Business of Art from 5-6:30 pm at UNE's Art Gallery on the Portland campus. Gallery owners like Edward Pollack, Andres Verzosa, Elizabeth Moss, Susan Maasch and Daniel Kany will talk about how they found their niche and some of the challenges facing artists and galleries in these economic times. There will also be works on display from each of the participating galleries. The evening is free and open to the public.

Over on Forest Ave it's the Wednesday Night Music Series at The Great Lost Bear from 6-9 pm. There's no cover and the special of the eve is Sea Dog Blueberry for $3.

The Sunset Folk Series should be going strong at Western Prom Park with Black Powder on the mic. Bring your picnic basket and a chair and enjoy the summer tunes starting at 7:45 pm.

And for some late night entertainment, how about karaoke with DJ Cougar downstairs at The Asylum. There's no cover tonight and you can choose from 2,000 song titles as you get yourself starting on the road to musical fame and fortune.

There are two reasons to make the quick drive to Scarborough on Thursday. Spencer and his mafia will be back at Bull Moose (this time the Scarborough location) for another 5:30 pm in-store performance. The wearing of high school letter jackets is appreciated. Also in town on this eve is a freebie wine tasting at Oak Hill Beverage from 4-7 pm. Taste some reds, whites and roses on the.

Of course you know by now that Thursday means Alive at Five at Monument Square - as long as the T'storms stay away. On stage tonight from 5-8 pm will be Dave Gutter and Tony McNaboe. MaineToday.com will once again be giving away a guitar signed by the musicians. All you have to do to enter is sign up for The Weekender newsletter at the MaineToday.com table.

And finally this week, if listening to Dave and Tom has you in a musical mood, head over to Port City Music Hall's Front Lounge when you leave Monument Square for your 15 Minutes of Fame. That's the theme tonight in the lounge so bring your iPod and spin your tracks for all to enjoy. No cover, lots of fun.

Thanks for mentioning the Spencer & The School Spirit Mafia performance at Bull Moose. It's on Tuesday, however. (They will be in our Scarborough store on Thursday too.)
