Going park-ing for free Saturday

Everyone needs a little hog in their Friday. Yes, you read that right - hog. As in pig. As in oink, oink. As in music in Biddeford.

The Hog Farm Studios Annex Grand Opening is where you're headed on Friday night for some good local listening. The annex is located at 140 Main St., suite 107 (back alley) in Biddo. Friday's event starts at 6:30 (in conjunction with the Biddeford ArtWalk). Sharing their tunes will be Blisters Grow, Isobell, South China, Tom Thumb, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and Brown Bird. Chris Clay will be showing off his film shorts. The admission is just $5 and you can also get yourself some beer, wine and light fare during the event. Sounds like it'll be worth the trip.

If you're looking for a daytime event to keep you busy Friday, how about heading over to the Breakwater School in Portland. There's an arts fest going on from 9 am-3:30 pm with a full-scale musical, show tunes, dancing, sculpture, art work, workshops and original short films. All the performances and creations will be by kids.

Also on Friday, if you do nothing else, drive to Freeport and get your chairs in Discovery Park so you'll have a spot for the biggest L.L. Bean concert of the summer, which happens on ...

Saturday. Blues Traveler's in the house - or park, as it were - and Freeport should be a zoo before and after the 7:30 pm show. Miss it and you'll be kicking yourself every time you hear "Hook". And if you weren't able to get up to the Maine mecca of shopping early to grab chair space, no worries; you'll still be able to hear the tunes and, hopefully, see the band on the big screen in the parking lot.

Since you'll want to get up to Freeport early, how about checking out the Freeport Creative Arts Sidewalk Art Show & Sale from 10 am-5 pm. You'll find it on the lawns of Key Bank and the Freeport Historical Society on Main Street. You can check out the works of jewelers, painters, woodworkers and fiber artists for free.

Other options? Yeah, there are a few.

If you're a Maine resident - lucky, lucky you! - you can get into any of our state parks and historical sites for free today. It's the state's way to pay you back for being the good resident you are. So hit up Popham Beach, Sebago Lake State Park, Crescent Beach, whatever one you choose and skip the parking and admission fees. Please, oh please, let the sun shine!

Get yourself to Cape Elizabeth - but get there early - to cheer on the competitors in the latest version of the Beach to Beacon 10K. The race starts at 8 am.

If you missed the Milk Mustache Tour on Thursday in Portland you're getting two more chances to show you milky upper lip today. The tour's first stop for Saturday is at Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook from 11 am-1 pm. Drink free milk, get your pic taken, enjoy a Soothie Smoothie, get a free health screening and relax with a chair massage. It's all free. Later today, the Mobile Drink Well, Live Well Tour will be at Hannaford on Forest Ave from 5-7 pm.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland is open once again this Saturday, offering tours from, 11 am-3 pm. Donate $5 and enjoys views of Portland Harbor from across the way at the only publicly accessible caisson-style lighthouse in the U.S.

Also in SoPo, Artascope Studios will be holding its annual summer show & sale. Check out jewelry, fine art, handmade cards, fabric arts, stained glass, home decor and more. Work from more than 20 artists and crafters will be on hand and you can look - maybe even touch - for free. If you want to walk away with something it'll cost you.

Finally tonight, how about some poetry under the stars? The Lammas Celestial Poetry Evening is taking place at Southworth Planetarium on the Portland campus of USM. The event starts at 7 pm and admission is by donation. Local poets will read their works and the works of others about the night sky, mythology, nature, the harvest and the universe. While you listen you'll see images of moons and stars projected on the dome theater. And you won't have to worry about rain.

You can get your fill of horses on Sunday with a family event at Scarborough Downs. Starting at 12:30 pm, see a 32-inch mini horse, shoeing demos and harnessing demos. The live racing start at 1:30 and it's the Mildred Williams International Driving Series for Lady Drivers. The admission's free but other proceeds will benefit Ribbons for Ribbons breast cancer research.

There's one more chance to do the milk mustache thing today - 5-7 pm, Hannaford on Forest Ave., Portland. Drink up and get your free massage.

One last thing for you this weekend, in hopes that the weather is gorgeous with blue skies, plenty of sun and rain on the West Coast instead of here: The Freedom Trail. It's a walk you'll remember and you don't need anyone to lead you around. The trail starts at Eastern Cemetery and there are 16 granite markers throughout the city, all highlighting the people, places, events and daily life associated with the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery movement in Portland.
