It's music for your ears
This week we're going to get in the groove. Monday through Thursday, there's plenty of music to be had in Greater Portland, no matter what kind of tunes you're into.
We'll kick it off on Monday out on the Sunset Deck on West Grand Ave in Old Orchard Beach. Get your dose of Joeyoke from 2-6 pm and again at 8 pm. Cover? No way. Get there early for a seat with a view of all those bikinis.
Just a few streets over you'll find Jimmy The Greek's, where it's trivia night starting at 7 pm. Show off your smarts and also take advantage of the Corona bucket specials out on the Greeki Tiki Patio. If Corona's not your thing, no worries; Jimmy has more than 100 brews to choose from. But hey, who's counting?
Finally tonight, back in the city, head out to the Old Port Tavern, one of Portland's longest standing bars. It'll be worth staying up until 9:30 when the karaoke starts with DJ Don Corman.
Tuesday is a night for jazz. And you can get it outdoors for one more week. Gorham's the place to be with the Gazebo Music Series from 6:30-8 pm. Daryll Morrow will be getting your feet moving.
If you'd rather listen to people who may not be musically inclined but still have plenty to say, you can head indoors in Gorham at The Gorham Grind for the spoken word open mic from 6-8 pm. Grab yourself a 20 oz. carmel latte for just $3.14.
A third option for you is open mic with Mike (Hayward) at Bull Feeney. The tunes - if you can call them that - start at 9 pm. The Guinness will be flowing way before that.
Free music is on the sched at SPACE on Wednesday. The start time is 7 pm for the OFF Stage with Hillytown series and three acts will be entertaining you in this all-ages show. Check out Panda Bandits, Dan Wholey and Jesse Pilgrim. And you may also be able to score a PBR at the bar.
If you happen to be in Westbrook, drop into the Frog & Turtle for the 8 pm show with Joe Farren. It's free to listen but a beverage will make the experience all that much better.
If you're more in the mood for a refined evening, Salt Exchange at 245 Commercial St. is the place for you. From 5-6:30, enjoy a free wine tasting complete with canapes. Sounds like a high-class good time.
And finally, we come to Thursday, the day that should get you prepared for your most awesome weekend ever. Or at least one that's worth getting out of bed for.
First off, the final Alive at Five concert of the summer from 5-8 pm at Monument Square. It's the Clash of the Titans with The Pretenders squaring off against Stevie Ray Vaughan squaring off against Nirvana. Sounds like something for everyone - and there's a beer garden too!
If you'd rather steer clear of the crowds, get yourself to Andy's Old Port Pub for Diamonds in the Rough at 5:30 pm. Get an early start here and you can move along to move fun later at ...
Bucks Naked BBQ in Freeport. It's open night mic starting at 8:30 in the Juke Joint downstairs and I'm betting some of those wanna-be singers will be pretty entertaining. But don't stay out too late cause Friday will be here before you know it.
