Get outdoors at Pineland or try a $5 movie

Start school vacation week off with some outdoor activities thanks to Pineland Farms. Many people have Monday off to celebrate Presidents Day and the New Gloucester facility is offering free admission to its trails and free rentals (while equipment lasts) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Anthem's Winter Family Fitness Day. Do some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing (Pineland makes snow!), ice skate or try the sledding hill. Word is there will also be free snacks and complimentary gift bags for the first 500 people who show up.

Skidompha Library in Damariscotta's a good place to be at 6:30 p.m. tonight for anyone who's still feeling the affects of Valentine's Day. Romance will be in the air with a screening of 1970's "Love Story" as part of the By Popular Demand Film Series. Watch Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal in their heydays for a $5 donation.

Tuesday's Feb. 21 and this year that means it's also Fat Tuesday. Celebrate with the Cajun Aces at Empire Dine & Dance's Mardi Gras party starting at 8:30 p.m. Cover's just $5 and there's sure to be plenty of beads to go around.

It's always a good day to see a movie, but at Nickelodeon Cinemas Tuesdays are the best days of all. Get bargain tickets for $5 all day (and night) for some of the movies up for awards during the Feb. 26 Oscars. This week "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" plays at 6:50 p.m., "Albert Nobbs" is at 7:10 p.m. and "The Descendants" plays at 7 p.m.

There's some early music to enjoy Wednesday if you're out and about for a mid-week happy hour. Be at Gingko Blue at 6 p.m. for some jazz and swing with The Scott Davis Quartet. No cover.

The night owls can enjoy some rock covers at the North of Nashville show with J.Biddy at Ri Ra. But you'll have to drink your after-work beers very slowly because the music doesn't get going until 10 p.m.

By Thursday you'll want to get back to Laser Fest at Southworth Planetarium. The event's held every February during school vacation week and today's shows are at noon, 2, 3, 7 and 8 p.m. Check the website for show sched and plan to pay $5 per person ($1 more for 3D glasses).

Smartphone users who still haven't gotten the hang of all those apps can attend a free workshop from U.S. Cellular today from noon to 2 p.m. at the Greater Portland Regional Chambers of Commerce. Get questions answered about Android-powered Electrify, HTC 7 Pro Windows phones, the BlackBerry Torch 9850, the company's mobile tablets and more.
