Start the week by jamming & learning
No one likes Mondays, but this one should be different. Why? Cause Vanessa Torres is playing at North Star Music Cafe (225 Congress St., Portland) at 7 pm. Sharing the stage will be Colorado's Driftwood Fire, made up of Lynn Scharf and Charlotte Formichella. They were honored at the 2007 International Narrative Song Competition and we locals all know how awesome Torres is. Suggested entrance fee is a mere 5 bucks.

This might be the Friday night to get out of town. Point your car south on the pike and motor straight on until you reach the Biddeford exit. It's Art Walk in that city tonight from 5-8 pm (every fourth Friday) and everything's free. You have your pick between the two most popular sites - Biddeford City Theater on Main Street or River Tree Arts in the North Dam Mill - or a handful of other locations, including Loving Anvil on Washington Street and Lacava on Water Street.

You won't need to pay a cover, but you should bring a bit of cash to tip the musicians.

If ever there's a Monday night to stay in, this is it. You need your rest. You need to detox. You need to fast for an evening. 'Cause tomorrow could be wild - and because it's Irish law that you have to eat corned beef or bangers and mash on March 17, you may have to break the budget.

Another weekend's almost here - time to plan where you'll have some beer. And even when you're working on a low budget there are plenty of options for having a good time.

If you had the kind of non-stop weekend I did you may just want to stay in tonight. There is a new episode of "The Closer" on, after all.
It's Art Walk and everything's free
Anytime it's a First Friday Art Walk night is a good time to leave your wallet at home. And since it comes around once a month in Portland, that means you can fill one out of every four Fridays with three hours of entertainment (5-8 pm) that won't cost you a thing.

Spending money hurts these days, whether it's change for the parking meter or $2.75 for a happy hour beer. And dinner and a movie at full price? Ouch.
