Cloverfield

I couldn’t believe the audiences reaction this Friday night to Cloverfield. For those of you living under a rock Cloverfield is “Lost” producer J.J. Abram’s new Giant Monster Attacks New York movie.

As credits began to roll here’s what I heard.

“Are you kidding me?!”
“That’s it?!”
“I wasted nine bucks to see that?!”
“Shortest movie ever!”

Kids, I understand that this movie is no Juno but I’m not sure it was trying to be Gone With the Wind. It was a spoof on the plethora of Godzilla movies that have floated through the Hollywood timeline.

I personally thought that the movie was great fun. Not a great FILM, just great fun. For me “Cloverfield” is the theater-near-you equivalent of a Universal Studios ride. The whole thing is shot in first person so you actually feel as though you’re in the movie.

Disagree with me if you like (I know most of you do), but the flick gave me exactly what I wanted out of it.

What did you think?
And were you disappointed by the monster?
Originally I thought they might be giant sewer rats. I was wrong.
What did you think?

I thought the movie was remarkable, but I understand why joe-schmoe movie goer may not have liked it. You have to understand what you are seeing before you go. It's not a "movie" per say, what you're watching is video footage recovered by the D.O.D. after an attack on NYC.
This is why there is no explanation of where the monster came from, what the infection is, what's happening elsewhere. No loose ends are tied up. Because folks, if this actually happened in real life, what you are seeing is what the situation would be.
The CGI work was very impressive considering how shaky and jarring the cinematography. Very creepy foley artistry. The characters weren't very well developed but who cares, because again, you are not watching a traditional Hollywood film.
I hope the success of this movie motivates more screen writers to create suspense/horror stories and concepts that seem real rather than the cheesy dribble that we usually get.
Feel free to get online and check out what the JJ Abrams nerds are trying to infer from all the hidden clues laden in the movie. It's beyond me, but so awesome.
