MC Chris and House of Fools - April 27, 2007
I went to my first show at the Station Friday night to see MC Chris and what a change of pace! The experience was very different from the Guster concert last weekend. There were four artists performing Friday night, and I went to the show for MC Chris.
Now who is MC Chris? He's a nerdcore rapper from Brooklyn with an attitude larger than himself. Despite his small size, you don't want to mess with his ninja skills and zombie-battling abilities. He has given voice talent to the popular Adult Swim show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and he has a new song featured on the Aqua Teen movie's soundtrack called "I Want Candy".
The first band that opened up for Friday's show was the local Sophomore Beat. Their music was catchy, but I had a really hard time getting hooked onto their emo-pop style of music. They must have an audience, but it doesn't include me.
The second band that opened was fantastic and they are called House of Fools. However concerning their name may be, these musicians certainly were not fools. These guys were very, very talented. Even though I had never heard them before, I got into the music very easily. If you want to listen to a new hot rock band that knows what they're doing, you should check out House of Fools. They played an amazing, faithful cover of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar", and I think that's generally a hard thing to do.
My main event of the night was on next, and that was MC Chris. It was only him. He didn't need anything except for his mic and his MacBook. He had all of his beats and rhythms prepared on iTunes (something I've seen before with the hip-hop duo Grand Buffet). MC Chris knew how to keep his audience satisfied, and it seemed like they had high expectations set. Having been an MC for the Reindeer Rock-Off, I know it can be hard to keep a show going, but MC Chris made it look so easy. He did anything that came from his mind. During one of his songs, he broke into the chorus of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" and had the audience scream "I don't care about that!" I really enjoyed that since I'm quite the Weezer fan. MC Chris's songs ranged from topics about weed to Boba Fett to sex. It may not be the most intellectual stuff out there, but it was most certainly entertaining. I was bouncing my hand up and down in the air for the entire set.
I had to leave after MC Chris was done, because 1) that's why I came to the show and 2) I had to work early in the morning. I've heard a little bit of the Boston rock band Piebald, but I gues I'll just have to catch them another time. Sorry guys. MC Chris and House of Fools made the show worth more than the ten dollars, and I'm sure Piebald would have even made it more so. I enjoyed the original rock music from House of Fools and the nerdy, mischevious rap from MC Chris. It was a great way to end a Friday night.
