They Might Be Giants first show of the tour!
I finally got to see my favorite band in the world last night, and I was pleasantly pleased. IT WAS AN AWESOME SHOW!
They Might Be Giants is a geek rock band that has been around since 1982, and they still rock very hard! I got to the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH very early, so I was able to find a spot right in front of the small stage. If I reached out with both arms, I would touch John Linnell, the keyboardist/accordionist/vocalist of the band. I didn't do that, though, because I didn't want to seem like a creep. It was pleasing enough to be this close to the band anyways!
They Might Be Giants was the only band that played, and I loved that, because I wouldn't have been able to wait otherwise. They played quite a long set with a lot new tracks from their upcoming album, The Else. My favorite new songs are probably "The Mesopotamians" and "The Cap'm". I know there has been some skepticism with fans about the new album, but trust me, all of the new material is great. Be ready to purchase the album on iTunes May 15th.
The band also played some great classics like "Birdhouse In Your Soul", "Ana Ng", and "James K. Polk". John Flansburgh, the spokesman/guitarist/vocalist of the band, interacted with the audience often, telling funny little anecdotes and reminiscing about past events. John Linnell also offered some humor in the mix with a new song called "Phone Calls from Dead People" in which Eleanor Roosevelt calls up Linnell, not knowing what's going on.
I was in a euphoric state of mind for the entire show. My favorite band was right in front of me playing awesome music. The time flew by so fast, because it was so damn fun!
After the show, I waited around for a set list, and I eventually got one. One of the stage crew members found a half-eaten banana behind the drum set and asked me if I wanted it, so I took it. Only a few minutes later, Marty Beller, the drummer, walked back out on stage to get something, so I had him autograph the banana that he had partially eaten. If anyone knows how to preserve a banana for a very long time, please contact me ASAP.
If you haven't heard any They Might Be Giants yet, you definitely need to give them a listen. They are such a cool and unique band. They Might Be Giant's new album The Else will be released on iTunes on May 15th, and the physical cd will be released on July 10th with a bonus full-length disc full of new rarities and songs from the podcasts. Be sure to pick up this "legendary new rock album." It's "all killer, no filler" says Flansburgh.
