New Coldplay song free for download!

Coldplay is working on their 4th full-length album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which is due out on June 12th. To promote their upcoming LP they have made their first single, "Violet Hill", available for download. All you have to do is go to the Coldplay song page, fill in your email address, zip code, and country, and you will receive a download link for "Violet Hill" mp3 in your inbox.

"Violet Hill" sounds pretty good. It feels darker than past songs, especially with the few heavy guitar riffs they fit in around the verses. The music creates a certain atmosphere that would make imagine a violet hill.

Well, that is all. I'm moving out of my dorm at USM today and going back to South Portland. Woohoo!

More mixtape love!

So if you haven't checked my Muxtape page from Monday, go there now and check out all the Maine musicians and artists I am showcasing. You will find bands such as Gully, The Mark Gennarro Band, 1800s Sea Monster and Satellite Lot. Give them a listen!

Remember, with this service you can upload your own MP3s and organize them to make your own online mixtape. Just go here and sign up!

I was tipped off for another online mixtape service the other day called Mixwit. This service has a more aesthetic appeal and uses available, streamable tracks found from seeqpod and Skreemr, two big MP3 search engines.

The big difference from Muxtape is that Mixwit allows you to make multiple mixtapes instead of one. It also has more visual appeal and only uses music readily available on the internet (if you have an FTP server, you can choose music from there as well). I also have the ability to embed my mixtape on various publishing/social network sites such as this one, Myspace and Facebook.

Here's the first mixtape I made from Mixwit:

I think I like this service a lot better even though I can't upload my own MP3s. Mixwit allows me to share my mixtapes a lot easier than Muxtape, and it just looks so cool!

So yeah, that's it for today. Make your own mixtape and share it with everyone here!

Finally, a way to share mixtapes online!

There has been some viral marketing for the launch of a new website called Muxtape.com. Muxtape.com allows you to create an account for free and upload 12 songs to make your own mixtape and share with others. Yes, it may be only one mixtape but this is a step in the right direction. It's mixtapes meet Web 2.0! Who woulda thunkit?

muxtape.png

While this may seem really cool and all, there are a few catches. Here is Muxtape's terms of service:

Muxtape is a service for creating mixtapes. Users may not upload multiple songs from the same album or artist, or songs they do not have permission to let Muxtape use. Individual users may not create multiple muxtapes. Accounts not meeting these restrictions are subject to termination without notice. Muxtape will never reveal your email address to a third party. Muxtape is alive.

So don't be expecting to upload a full album and keep your account.

I'm going to be making my own playlist in the next few days to share with all of my readers. You can find my Muxtape page right here.

Do you have a Muxtape? Started one? Share yours here!

Download the new Nine Inch Nails album free and legally!

Nine Inch Nails has released Ghosts I on The Pirate Bay, a peer-to-peer network infamously known for the pirating and distributing of illegal copies of records, movies, games and other media. But The Pirate Bay doesn't just distribute illegal media. It distributes anything people wish to upload, and that includes legal copies of Nine Inch Nails' latest album (well, only the first volume).

How could they do this? Don't they belong to a record label? What will the RIAA say? Well, if you don't remember from last Fall, NIN's frontman Trent Reznor announced his declaration of independence from record labels. Nine Inch Nails is free to do what they want now, and one of the big things they're doing now is shaping the future of music distribution.

A free MP3 for your Valentine

The Brooklyn/Massachusetts-trio Mobius Band just released a cover of Daft Punk's "Digital Love" on Stereogum. It's a really cool recreation of the original. Where Daft's version relies heavily on electronic instruments and manipulation, Mobius Band gives the song a very acoustic feel with interspersed digital elements.

You can download it right here, or you can listen to it in Stereogum's embedded MP3 player below. Enjoy, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Of Montreal covers galore! And a new song from Montreal based Islands!

Stereogum posted a link to a goldmine of free Of Montreal covers the other day, so I figured I should share them with everyone here. You can find the great plethora of oM songs here on You Ain't No Picasa. To make the mass downloading a little easier, download this helpful Firefox extension. The collection includes covers ranging from more recent bands like The Apples in Stereo, The Shins, and The Fiery Furnaces to classic rock bands like The Beatles, The Who, and Velvet Undergound. Enjoy!

I'd also like to point out that Montreal-based indie band Islands has released a new song on their Myspace called "The Arm". Go and check it out. If you like what you hear, you should check out their roots (see: The Unicorns)

New Radiohead material has surfaced!

Ever since Radiohead's stellar Hail to the Thief release in 2003, fans have anxiously been waiting for their next album. It's four years after Hail to the Thief and the upcoming album is still in the works.

The Radiohead guys know better not to go this long without giving a little to the fans. On their official blog, DEAD AIR SPACE, they just released a mysterious mash-up of songs from their new album. You can download the mash-up right here.

Looking for some new music?

stereogum has been an online music journal I've been visiting lately, and the people there are very generous. It's almost too often that stereogum releases MP3s from various bands that are either on tour or getting ready to release new content. I just downloaded two new Polyphonic Spree songs for free, and it was completely legal. You can do the same with other up and coming artists in the indie music world.

You can just listen to the tracks on the embedded player below, or you can go to this page and download the music.

I suggest downloading Get Him Eat Him (they're coming to the Space Gallery in Portland very soon), Laura Veirs (offered vocals in the new Decemberists cd), The New Pornographers, Blonde Redhead, and of course, The Polyphonic Spree.
