Young people appear to be leaving Maine in large numbers, according to the latest Census Bureau data.
The age group with the greatest decline in population is the 20-to 34-year-old category. Since 1990, that group has declined by 21.97 percent in Maine. That's far greater than the nation, which had only a 5.37 percent decrease. Piscataquis and Aroostook lost the most 20-somethings,though the census data doesn't show if these people left the state or just the county. Every county in Maine saw a decline in this age group. In fact, only four towns in the whole state saw an increase in this young-adult category.
Partly as a result of this trend, the population in Maine is getting older. The greatest increase of any age group came in the 45-to 54-yearold range. The aging of the baby boom accounts for some of the growth in this category. Also, people moving to Maine and retiring here account for some of the increase in the 85-yearold and older population, the age group with the second-greatest increase.
