Sagadahoc was the 15th county incorporated in Maine. It was set off from Lincoln in 1854. It is the smallest county and, according to the most recent census, is the fourth most densely populated county in the state.

In the census of 1860, the first to enumerate Sagadahoc as a separate county, it had 21,790 residents. Its growth rate has been generally upward, except in the 10 years between 1920 and 1930 when it lost 26.5% of its population by far the most dramatic drop in that time period in the state.

The Sagadahoc of 2000 is not radically different from that of 1990. Its population increased but it did not experience the dramatic growth of Cumberland of York counties.

The percentage of the population that is between 35 and 44 years of age is the largest in the state. Sagadahoc also has the largest percentage of the population under the age of 15. Not surprisingly, it has the largest average family size along withYork County.

The Census Bureau rates Sagadahoc the third most diverse county in Maine. The percentage of its population that is black is the second largest in the state and the percentage of its population that considers itself to be Pacific Islander is the largest in Maine.
