For the first time in its history, Androscoggin County lost population between censuses. Other counties that lost population are Washington, Piscataquis, Aroostook and Penobscot. The cities and towns in Androscoggin that lost the most population were Lewiston (10.2%), Livermore Falls (6.6%), Lisbon (4.0%) and Auburn (3.5%).

Androscoggin is the second most densely populated county in the state and has the second largest metropolitan area in the state, Lewiston-Auburn, with a population of 58,893. Androscoggin and Penobscot counties have the lowest median ages in the state.

Only three percent of Androscoggin County's housing units are for seasonal use. This gives it the lowest percentage of vacant housing units in the state (8.6%).
