Step 1 - Preparation
GET ORGANIZED: Create folders for your
content.
One folder will be for all your documents. Name it "web pages." Inside this folder, create another folder named "web images."
PLAN AHEAD: Before posting content on
your web page, jot down the answers to the following questions:
-
Who is your audience?
Think of your current group members, supporters,
and potential new members. What information would be useful to them or the
general public? What background and current information will they want? Do you have documents, brochures, newsletters,
or forms stored in your computer that you can post for them on the web?
-
How should I organize topics or special content areas
on my web site?
Your topics might include:
- About Us
- Our Programs
- How to Join
- Contact information
- Latest News
- Feedback Form
- Calendar
-
Do I need to create sub-groups or related web sites
for committees, specific programs, or branches in different locations?
-
What should I put on my home page?
The first impression that visitors have of your
group is especially important if you want to attract members. Do you have
any hot news, new resources, or success stories? Does your group have a
logo? Do you have any images to spice up your text and give your visitors
a "feel" for your group. Present your information clearly. Don't
forget to include your phone and fax numbers and mailing address. Including your web site address is also helpful to remind people how to find you when they return.
USE A WORD PROCESSOR: Prepare
your text in a word processor first. You can spell check it and read it
over to ensure brevity, clarity, and good grammar.
SELECT IMAGES: Start with about four images
and a logo to add color and illustrate group events. You can scan images yourself or select free clip art. Be sure to save your images in the right format (see Working with images on your site for more information). Save your images in your "web images" folder.
Now that you have your web site outline, text
and images, you are ready to post them on your web site.
