Wake-N-Bakery knows how to do breakfast, with a fresh, spicy touch

The Wake-N-Bakery & Glass Emporium has been at its current location for five years, and while it's easy to fly by it on the way to Sebago Lake, it's worth stopping in.

The simple-looking breakfast place on Route 302 is a showroom for blown glass, but waitress Brie Cartier says it's first and foremost a breakfast and lunch place - and that is obvious from the food.

The bakery has been in business for 10 years, and the spicy breakfast and lunch specialties are a hit with locals. We visit every chance we get when we're out that way.

This place caters to breakfast regulars who like their morning meal done right.

However, Wake-N-Bakery has lots of fun, spicy omelets and breakfast sandwiches that will make even the most basic breakfast eater adventurous.

We tried the cowboy omelet with baked ham, onions, green peppers and American cheese with cinnamon toast ($7.29). It was incredibly fresh and cheesy. Of course, we got the necessary sausage on the side ($2.59), and these links met our high standards for tasty, spicy meats.

Make a note to go to this place with an appetite, because you'll want to clean your plate. We couldn't - but we love the doggie bags here.

The Greek beef burrito also is excellent ($7.59), with spinach, mushrooms, bacon, feta and eggs. In all of the omelets, the veggies and cheeses are loaded up and fresh.

"We do an equal business on omelets and burritos. The bacon, jerk chicken burrito is popular; so is the cowboy omelet," Cartier said.

Many of the spicy sauces are homemade inventions of the Wake-N-Bakery staff.

We've never tried the Wake-N-Bakery for lunch, but plan to, specifically for the barbecue pulled pork sandwich ($7.99) or the cranberry and walnut chicken salad wrap ($6.79).

The wraps come on white, wheat or spinach, and all of them look tasty and fun.

The wait staff is fast, friendly and attentive, keen to make sure you are satisfied. The atmosphere has the relaxing flavor of the islands.

The coffee bar is a bonus, allowing thirsty breakfast-goers to fill up when they need to.

If we lived closer to this Westbrook eatery, we'd frequent it too.

The Features staff of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram anonymously samples meals for about $7.
