WATERVILLE — Is there a movie buff who might enjoy cruising along in a Volkswagen Jetta that was driven by actor Ed Harris, or a Crown Victoria police cruiser driven by actor William Fichtner? Or maybe they'd like a lamp that was used to dress a movie set. Those fans can find some of these items this weekend at a sale of prop cars, furniture, clothing and other items that were used in the filming of the HBO movie "Empire Falls" in Waterville and Skowhegan this summer. For people wanting something besides a scrapbook and memories of the movie shoot, the sale will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the "Empire Falls" production office, at 8 Water St.

Maria Nay, set decorator for the film, said major production studios own their own prop houses, where they inventory and store items until after a film is released.

"But on location, like this, HBO has no facility," Nay said. "Obviously, we don't want to store it or haul it around, so we usually charge 50 cents on the dollar or less to dispose of it quickly and efficiently."

Cars will be sold by sealed bid. About eight are available, including the 1992 VW Jetta driven by Harris and the 1998 Crown Victoria used by Fichtner.

All cars will have a minimum bid. People should mark the bids "Movie Car Bids" and mail or drop them off at Falls Films Inc., 8 Water St., Waterville 04901.

Nay said she tries as often as possible to rent instead of own props: "One, because it is cost-efficient and two, because I don't want the assets when we're done."

Some of the clothes bought by the wardrobe department have been shipped to a prop house in Los Angeles, where they came from.

Most items will be sold at cut rates because they can't be reused or transported, Nay said. Because "Empire Falls" was a film and not a series, there is no benefit to storing the items.
