Maine artists can apply for Monhegan residency
Applications are being accepted for the Monhegan Artists' Residency for emerging Maine artists. Formerly called the Carina House Residency, this summer the program provides a visual artist with the opportunity to live and work on Monhegan for five weeks.
The application deadline is March 27. For guidelines, a history of the residency program and a list of past residents, visit the website. Applicants will be notified on or before April 30.
The residency program is designed to give back to Maine artists a part of their heritage and tradition, including the opportunity for creative experimentation and exploration on Monhegan Island. The program offers living quarters, studio space and a $500 stipend for a five-week period, Aug.t 9-Sept. 12. Entry is open only to Maine residents and is aimed at emerging visual artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture or the digital arts.
An important goal of the program is to enhance the careers of serious artists who have yet to win wide recognition for their work. Quality of work is the primary criterion for selection.
A jury of art professionals selects artists. This year's judges are Susan Danly, Curator of Graphics, Photography and Contemporary Art at the Portland Museum of Art; Philip Isaacson, art critic for the Maine Sunday Telegram; and Kate Chappell, painter, printmaker and member of the Peregrine Press.
Previous artist residents include John Knight, Nicole Duennebier, Connie Hayes, Sarah Knock, Marguerite Robichaux and Robert Pollien.
