Portland participating in Earth Hour
On Saturday, March 28, the City of Portland will participate in Earth Hour, a global event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and the Sierra Club to raise awareness about the affects of global warming. City Hall lights will be turned off for the entire weekend in show of support for Earth Hour.
Portland will join other major cities around the world to highlight the impact electricity usage has upon global warming. The majority of Maine's electricity is generated by the burning of fossil fuels which causes the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributes to climate change. Climate change can lead to an increase in the earth's temperature, resulting in rising sea levels, an increase in drought and severe storms, and major changes to the environment. For more information about the event, visit www.earthhour.org/home.
