Eat part of the World’s Longest Lobster Roll
West End Neighborhood Association and Linda Bean's Perfect Maine are teaming up in an effort to secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by building a record setting 60-foot long Linda Bean's Perfect Maine Lobster Roll. And its all for a good cause!
The Guinness World Record attempt will take place between 11 am and 1 pm
on Commercial Street during the Old Port Festival. The event will be witnessed and certified by Portland Mayor Jill Duson and the Executive Director of the Maine Lobster Council, Dane Somers.
The idea to build the world's longest lobster roll as a fund raising event was inspired by children who frequent the Reiche Library in Portland's West End. Michael Whittaker, a librarian and member of the association couldn't help notice how excited the children would get when looking through the Guinness Book of World Records.
"I used to read the book from cover-to-cover and think about what records I could break or make when I got older. And then it hit me: why not a fundraising event to pay for the kids' swimming lessons this year # all built around making the world's longest lobster roll?" said Whittaker.
Linda Bean, who operates lobster buying stations at Vinalhaven Island, Port Clyde and Tenants Harbor, Maine, answered the call Whittaker put in the newspaper about donating the lobster meat needed to construct the 60 foot long lobster roll, suggesting her special recipe be used. She noticed he wanted no fillers like celery, and hers is a quarter pounder made totally without fillers.
"Linda called right away after reading about the event and said she would supply all the lobster meat needed for our fund raising event," said Roseanne Graef, president of the West End Neighborhood Association.
Bean has started opening stands along the coast of Maine and in Florida to feature her lobster roll recipe. This summer they will be found in Searsport, Camden, Port Clyde, Freeport and Del Ray Beach, FL. And she hopes to locate one in the Old Port of Portland.
After the record setting Linda Bean's Perfect Maine Lobster Roll has been carefully assembled and certified for Guinness World Book of Records, it will be sold to festival attendees to raise funds to support the West End Neighborhood Association's Swimming Scholarship Fund. For a $20 donation, festival attendees will receive an official Guinness Book of World Records certificate of authentication and be served a piece of the Linda Bean's Perfect
Maine Lobster Roll along with a beverage and a bag of potato chips.

Good luck to our fellow Mainers, the West End Neighborhood Association Youth Group of Portland!
