Feed ME Food Drive coming up

On Saturday, June 20, WCSH 6, WLBZ 2 and Hannaford Supermarkets, will hold Feed ME # a food drive to benefit the largest hunger relief organization in Maine - Good Shepherd Food-Bank - and their more than 600 member agencies located throughout the state.

WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2 on-air personalities will broadcast live throughout the morning from Hannaford Supermarkets on Wilson Street in Brewer, Sabattus Street in Lewiston, Forest Avenue (Back Cove) in Portland and Main Street in Sanford. Food donations can be brought to these locations on that Saturday only; cash donations will be accepted at all Hannaford Supermarkets June 1 to June 30.

Most Needed Foods
• Canned Meats (tuna, chicken, turkey, ham, spam, sausages, etc.)
• Canned Vegetables & Beans
• Canned Fruit
• Instant Potatoes & Rice
• Canned Soups
• Ravioli and Canned Pasta
• Peanut Butter

Maine hunger statistics (provided by Good Shepherd Food-Bank) show that 10 % of Maine households, or 143,575 people, experience food insecurity, meaning they are unsure of when or where they will have their next meal.

More than 40% of Maine children under the age of 12 show some evidence of hunger. More than 20,000 Maine children are hungry, and an additional 65,000 children are at risk of hunger. Children living in households with the risk of hunger are more likely to experience school or health related problems.

Last year the Food-Bank distributed 10 million pounds of food to families and individuals throughout Maine. Partner agencies include soup kitchens, shelters, after school programs, food pantries, day care centers, senior centers and youth programs. The majority of Food-Bank clients are the working poor, senior citizens and children.
