Run, drink, eat: Wine Flight Training Runs

The Wine Flight Training Sessions begin on May 26 and continue each Tuesday evening until October 17, when participants will have their gustatory and aerobic fitness tested at the Wine Flight 5K running and walking event.

The organizers of the Wine Flight had a quiet launch last year and were surprised by the hundreds who responded. An equally enthusiastic and tasty response is anticipated this year. Joining the Maine Ambassadors of Food and Drink and race manager Tri-Maine is Greater Portland Landmarks, stewards of the Portland Observatory and operators of the entertaining and informational walking tours of the city.

Participants in the training series, called Passport to Portland, meet on Monument Square between 6 and 630 to receive their map and information about the evening's course.

The course blends local and culinary history and the occasional tasty surprise before arriving at the evening's reward: a glass of wine or beer and an array of appetizers that show off the hosting venue's menu.

The Season Passport costs $210, which includes all 20 sessions, free entrance to the fall event and a distinctive jersey that can be worn during Wine Flight. Participants can also purchase 6 sessions for $78, 12 pack sessions for $144 or individual sessions for $15. Ticket sales are capped at 30 per event, with priority given to pass holders.
