Biddeford coffee shop welcomes students

Biddeford's new coffee shop, Buzz, won the scavenger hunt recently sponsored by the Heart of Biddeford for UNE resident assistants. The winning team chose their favorite downtown business and presented the owner, Dan Adams, with a prize of $100.

Located in the lobby of North Dam Mill, Buzz features coffee, espresso, locally baked pastries, and fresh fruit smoothies. The mill is located at 2 Main Street just before the bridge to Saco Island.

Now serving Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. # 4 p.m., Adams, 34, hopes to expand his hours in the fall. With UNE students in mind, he plans to orchestrate events in the lobby, which is a good size for friendly gatherings. Meanwhile, you can bring your laptop and tune into free wi-fi. Adams learned the coffee trade at various coffee houses from New York to L.A.

"I wanted to settle in a small city with a great community," he said. "And I think Biddeford is the perfect spot."

Doug Sanford who developed the mill agrees. "Biddeford has great architecture, a university, and we're on the ocean," he said. "These mills are going to be the renaissance."

Sanford, president of Eastland Construction and Development, thinks the mill's success is due to the many things that are happening here. The ground and first floors are dedicated to businesses including a gym, pizza shop, craftsmen, and even a nut roaster. The upper floors contain 49 apartments # all of which are filled. But there was no place to get a good cup of coffee. Sanford was looking for someone like Adams to make it happen.

"We love Dan," he said. "He's unflappable."
