23 skidoo: spontaneous smallworks show begins with unjuried, inclusive call
for art and gathers the works of over forty artists in a collaboration
between drawing room and the Jameson Art Group for one week in June. Without
a theme, this random grouping of artists leads to chance collisions of
meaning and aesthetics, which support expression, exploration, and inquiry
at the heart of artmaking. This exhibit and call for art meets drawing
room's mission to provide opportunities to unhinge perceptions of art and
community in favor of unexpected experiences of both.

Lobster college, a learning vacation on the Maine coast
No SATs required, no essay tests, and some of the most luxurious dorm rooms ever! After a great success in 2008 - Lobster College is back.
Registrations are now being accepted for this most unique learning vacation, organized by the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine and hosted again this year by the Kenniston Hill Inn Bed & Breakfast in Boothbay, Maine. Lobster College is an educational adventure designed for people interested in enjoying a fun extended weekend on the Maine coast. It's a chance to learn everything and anything there is to know about Maine's premier crustacean. The event is scheduled for September 17-20.
Kenniston Hill Inn B&B will serve as home base for Lobster College. Participants will enjoy the gracious hospitality of host, Dianne Ward, at this classic shipbuilders mansion built in 1786 in spectacular Boothbay, Maine. (You can see and learn more about the inn at www.kennistonhillinn.com.)
Various field trips are scheduled throughout the Boothbay Harbor area as part of the curriculum. "Folks who join us for Lobster College will experience hands-on and on-site learning about lobsters directly from lobstermen and lobster dealers themselves, as well as from University of Maine faculty. We've based Lobster College in the heart of lobstering country, at one of the most picturesque areas on the coast of Maine," said Robert Bayer, executive director of the Lobster Institute.
"We'll be taking a trip out to haul traps, we'll visit a working lobster wharf, and we'll provide lectures on a variety of lobster-related topics. We'll even show you how to bait a trap." According to Bayer, those who enroll in Lobster College will learn about lobster biology and ecology, value-added lobster products, lobster cuisine, stock management and other areas within the lobster industry. "And of course, there will be plenty of lobster to eat," said Bayer. "At our last Lobster College graduation, we counted them up and found that we had enjoyed ten different lobster dishes during the course of the weekend."
Students from last year's Lobster College came from Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, Maine # and even Australia. One lobster college alumnus, shared these thoughts at the end of the program, "The words great and excellent are much overused in our society. But these words must be used to describe this program. Five star all the way." Another said, "Bravo to all on a fabulous time. Thank you for a fun and great educational four days."
In addition to being an educational program, Lobster College doubles as a fundraiser for the Lobster Institute. The Institute is a research and outreach organization with a mission of protecting, conserving and enhancing the vitality of the lobster as a resource, and lobstering as an industry and as a way of life. It was founded jointly by members of the lobster industry and faculty at the University of Maine.
While participants won't need SATs to get in, enrollment for Lobster College is limited to the first 20 "students", and the deadline to enroll is August 31. Tuition is $575 per person (including all lobster meals) and room rates range from $450- $570 for the entire weekend. Information about Lobster College, including cost and how to register, and about other programs and services of the Lobster Institute, is available on the Internet at www.lobsterinstitute.org or by calling (207)581-2751or (207)581-1443.

Cinemas in Maine unite with cinemas in 49 other States of America for One Week for One Film Festival
Maine's Frontier Café Cinema & Gallery in Brunswick, The Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville and Grand theatre in Ellsworth will unite with over seventy other cinemas in 49 other States of America, via the 12th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival which will take place across five continents between the 21st and 27th of September 2009.
"There seems to be a new willingness among Americans to re-engage with the world and the participation of cinemas in all 50 states in an international event seems to reflect that," said Nicholas Mason, founding director of the Festival.
Each year MANHATTAN SHORT selects twelve short films from around the world and distributes them across five continents. During the course of one week, cinema audiences at each venue are asked to vote for their favorite short film. Votes from each venue are tabulated and sent through to MANHATTAN SHORT headquarters and the winner is announced after the last show in NYC on the last Sunday in September. This year marks the first time in the Festival's history that all 50 states of the United States participate in the Festival.
"Once the word got out that we were really interested in getting participation from every state, the response from cinemas, cinema bookers, film societies, and state film commissioners was overwhelming," said Mason. "People were calling us, emailing us, telling us they just wanted to be part of it. I'm not sure whether it is a change in the Presidency or whatever, but you really got the sense that the people in this country are really proud to be part of this country, and they want to unite, and I am just so happy to be part of it. I don't think this would have happened two years ago." Added Mason, who heralds from Sydney Australia
MANHATTAN SHORT continues to expand its reach every year with more screenings in more countries. In 2008, the Festival presented 295 shows in 115 cities on four continents in one week. This year the Festival has already booked over 293 shows in 79 cities across all 50 states of the US alone. And with a deadline of June 30 for cinemas to confirm bookings, the festival is expecting at least 500 shows in North and South America, Australia, Europe, and Asia to take place during one week in September this year.
For filmmakers wishing to enter the 2009 Manhattan Short Film Festival, the Festival carries a July 31st Deadline. Films must be 18 minutes and under in length. For more information visit the Festival's website at www.ManhattanShort.com

More and more people are recognizing the cost and health benefits of cooking at home with ingredients that are fresh, local and in season. They know, for example, that fresh and local produce tastes better and costs less and also that buying local supports farmers, fishermen, businesses and communities in very real and direct ways.
With this in mind, World Harbors - Maine makers of gourmet sauces and marinades - has initiated a 'Look Local' campaign, beginning with a contest on Facebook. The company is inviting entrants to submit either a video or a picture of themselves making a recipe that combines one or more ingredient items particular to their locale or State with any World Harbors product. For instance, if one is from Florida they might include oranges, or from Wisconsin a locally made cheese, or if there is a free-range farm nearby, entrants should use their fresh meat. Contestants can use either a recipe of their own or choose one from the online cookbook at www.worldharbors.com.
Winners of the contest will receive fantastic Maine-made prizes, such as Maine Lobster, Maine Ice cream and a Sea Bag™, the eco-friendly totes made from recycled sails. To enter, join the "World Harbors Look Local Contest" group on Facebook where all the rules and regulations are explained. Maine Named Third Most Bike-Friendly State
The League of American Bicyclists has named Maine as the third most bike-friendly state in the country. Maine rose three spots in the 2009 ranking, based on a 75-item survey covering legislation, education, policies and programs, infrastructure, evaluation and planning, enforcement and efforts to encourage people to bike for transportation and recreation.
"Our ranking is a tribute to 17 years of advocacy by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) working with local bicycle advocates, bike shops and clubs, supportive legislators and MaineDOT to improve cycling conditions in our state," said Allison Vogt, BCM's executive director.
"The Maine law requiring motorists to give three feet of clearance when passing bikes has become a model for other states," Vogt said. "The Bicycle Coalition of Maine partners with MaineDOT to teach bicycle safety to 10,000 schoolchildren each year, and we manage the state's Safe Routes to School program. We train police officers about bicycle safety and the law. We also work with state agencies on an effective Share the Road media campaign."
Vogt said that Maine still has much to accomplish to improve bicycle safety and access. BCM's top legislative priority this session is implementing Complete Streets policies ensuring that roads are built to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians as well as motorists. A Complete Streets bill now is before the Legislature's Natural Resources Committee, and similar legislation is being considered at the federal level.
"Now more than ever, Maine people are using bicycles to improve their health, save money, protect the environment and enjoy our beautiful state," Vogt said. "We have a great opportunity to build on this success."
"Creating bike-friendly communities will reap economic benefits by helping Maine attract residents, businesses and more bicycle tourism. Until every road is safe for biking, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine will continue to work as the voice of Maine's bicyclists to improve conditions for biking through increased funding, better roads and by spreading the word to Share the Road."
Maine was number six in the League's initial ranking of Bicycle Friendly States last year. Washington and Wisconsin have held the number one and number two spots, respectively, for both years. More information about the 2009 rankings can be found at www.bicyclefriendlystates.org.

Chef Rob Evans of Hugo’s Wins James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Northeast
Awarded last night in New York City, The James Beard Foundation (JBF) Awards are a crowning achievement for chefs and restaurants around the country. This year, one of Portland's best known chefs has been given his due # Rob Evans, chef and owner of Hugo's restaurant at 88 Middle Street in Portland, won the JBF award for Best Chef in the Northeast.
Chef Evans beat out four other nominees to win the award # three chefs from the Greater Boston area as well as the two co-owners of Arrows restaurant in Ogunquit. "I think we've got a good scene happening in Portland," noted Evans shortly after receiving the award. "It's not only good for me, but it's good for Portland. It solidifies Portland's standing as a strong food town."
Evans has been nominated for the award three times before, but this is his first win. Chef Evans was honored in 2004 with the "Best New Chef Award" from Food & Wine Magazine, another coveted chef honor. The restaurant has also been awarded the American Automobile Association (AAA)'s prestigious Four-Diamond title for multiple years.
A self-trained chef, Evans and his wife Nancy have operated Hugo's for 10 years. Their only concern is that many people mistakenly assume Hugo's is a restaurant to reserve for special occasions. "We want to encourage more local people to eat at Hugo's. I think they will be pleasantly surprised to find out we are in the average diner's price range."
Deemed "the Oscars of the food world," by Time magazine, The James Beard Foundation Awards are the country's most coveted honor for chefs; food and beverage professionals; broadcast media, journalists, and authors working on food; and restaurant architects and designers.
The JBF Best Chef awards honor chefs who have set new or consistent standards of excellence in their respective regions. Best Chef: Northeast encompasses chefs working in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York state (New York City has its own category), Rhode Island and Vermont. Maine's only previous JBF Best Chef winner is Sam Hayward, chef and owner of Fore Street restaurant, who won in 1994.
About Chef Rob Evans and Hugo's Restaurant:
Hugo's passion lies in its love for creative food, good wine and wholesome Maine ingredients. The culinary team at Hugo's, under the direction of chef and owner, Rob Evans, delivers regional cuisine that is both unexpected yet ultimately familiar. The four-course prix fixe menu is available nightly, Tuesday through Saturday, from the dining room. The recently introduced Gastro Pub menu is available nightly from the bar.
Hugo's is located in downtown Portland, Maine, at the corner of Franklin and Middle Street. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30-9:00 PM and on Friday and Saturday from 5:30 -9:30 PM. Call (207) 774-8538 for reservations. More information is available at www.hugos.net.

"I believe businesses and citizens bear some of the responsibility of helping our arts communities thrive. I am particularly excited about hosting Pop the Cork 2 to benefit CMCA this year, and I am proud to lend Cellardoor's support."
Doulton continued, "All of my, and Cellardoor's, donations are made with the hope that I am not just writing a check, but can see a lasting benefit for the next generations # for education and community. Hopefully our support will encourage other organizations to get on board in support of the arts as well."
Doulton has also supported the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, the Maine Community Foundation and various other Maine-based non-profit organizations.

The Public Theatre's 16th Annual Silent Auction opened April 28th and will run through May 10th, coinciding with the theatre's last show of the season, The Last Mass at St. Casimir's by Tom Dudzick.
"The Auction would not be possible without the generous support of the scores of businesses and individuals in our community. We are very grateful for their support, especially in the current economic environment." noted Connie Bedette, Silent Auction Chair. "It is great to see how many businesses appreciate the value in participating."
This year's Auction will feature over 200 items from area businesses, local artists, and theatre supporters, including original works of art, ski lift tickets, golf, tickets to arts events, and other great gifts. There will also be everyday items, from oil changes and grocery gift cards to spa treatments, yoga sessions, and massages. You can even bid on a pair of tickets to the Red Sox vs Oakland A's # July 8, 2009 at 7:05pm. The great thing about the Silent Auction is there truly is something for everyone.
Red Sox Fans take note: Two tickets to the Boston Red Sox vs the New York Yankees are being raffled off as part of the Silent Auction Event. The game is at Fenway on June 9, 2009 at 7:05pm. These are excellent seats and raffle tickets are only $1 each or $5 for six chances.
The Raffle and Silent Auction are open to the public. You may place bids on the Silent Auction items or purchase raffle tickets through May 10 during Box Office Hours, 12pm-5pm daily, and during performances. The Public Theatre is located at Lisbon & Maple Streets in Downtown Lewiston. For more information about this event, call The Public Theatre at 782-2211.
