PORTLAND TRAILS
This easy 1.25-mile trail circles Mackworth with great views of Casco Bay. The trail is surfaced with wood chips and packed soil and leads past a fairy house village. Steep side trails allow more fit hikers access to the shoreline. Mackworth is a bird sanctuary of about 100 acres. It's connected to Falmouth by a causeway (look for the entrance off Route 1 at the end of Andrews Avenue.) and is open to visitors from dawn to dusk. The perimeter path is maintained by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. You can have your dog on a leash, and the gatehouse guard has been known to have treats for your dog. Borrow a map from the guard at the gatehouse. An outhouse also is available in the parking lot.
Eastern Prom Trail
Access this 2.1-mile trail either from the corner of Commercial and India streets or from the East End Beach parking area. You can also get to the trail from Commercial Street near Fore Street. The trail runs along the waterfront on an old rail corridor with terrific harbor and ocean views. Locals love to walk, run, bike and rollerblade here. There are public toilets at East End Beach - where there's swimming, kayaking and a boat launch. Dogs are allowed on the beach off season. The trail connects to Back Cove Trail near Tukey's Bridge.
University Park Trail
This unpaved trail of .6 miles begins on Harvard Street and loops back on Yale Street in a narrow area of woodlands. It's a flat trail that offers quiet and solitude. There is also room for dogs to roam. Access the trail from behind the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Allen Avenue or from Harvard Street off Washington Avenue. University Park Trail allows access to the Portland Arts and Technology High School Trail on Allen Ave.
Presumpscot River Trail
The 0.4-mile trail begins at the parking area on the west side of Allen Avenue Extension, opposite Walton Park. It's a primitive trail with many tree roots and winds through the woods, at points high above or very near the river. The trail ends just past the location of the former dam. Private property beyond this point is marked and should be respected.
Westbook Riverwalk
An attractive 0.6-mile bike and pedestrian path follows the bank of the Presumpscot River into Westbrook's Riverbank Park and historic downtown. The paved trail begins at Cumberland Street and ends at Bridge Street. Parking is available in Riverbank Park off Main Street.
Baxter Woods
Baxter Woods is a 30-acre nature preserve offering towering pines and quiet, shaded trails suitable for foot and bike traffic. It's a great off-leash area for dogs. A sign marks the start of the 0.75-mile main trail from the Stevens Avenue side. Parking is available along Hartley Street, Stevens Avenue and Forest Avenue.
Stroudwater Trail
This lovely wooded trail follows the winding banks of the Stroudwater River from the historic Stroudwater Village area to the Westbrook city line, west of Hutchins Drive. Three trailheads, each with parking for 5-9 cars, give access to the 2.75-mile trail. From outer Congress Street look for Portland Trails' sign 1/10 of a mile west of Westbrook Street at River's Edge Drive. Larger parking areas are available at Blueberry Rd. and Hutchins Dr.
Portland's only natural waterfall is on the edge of the 85-acre Fore River Sanctuary. It's a short walk from the end of Hillcrest Avenue. The heavily-wooded area is a habitat for songbirds and small mammals. Near the falls the trail connects to a loop trail that goes around the sanctuary. In all, there are 2 miles of trails. Hillcrest starts at the intersection of Brighton Avenue and Capisic Street. Parking is at the end of the road.
