Oversimplified, Christensen shows how mature companies (like newspapers) traditionally succeed by always increasing value to their most valuable customers. Picture this as a rising line on a graph, and color it blue. The dilemma comes when upstart companies create products and services that appeal to non-customers of the mature businesses, and grow from there. Picture a rising line on that graph, below the blue line, and color it green. If the mature company is smart, it won't put all its attention on the blue line. MaineToday.com lives on the green line.
