Why are you asking me to register?
We're asking our users to register so that we can continue to offer free access to quality local content. We plan to use the demographic information we collect to target messages displayed on MaineToday.com. This makes their campaigns more valuable, which helps us generate revenue, and ultimately keeps the site free. The demographic information also helps us tailor new and existing products to the needs of our audience.

Many newspaper and other Web sites now require registration. We aim to make the registration as fast and easy as possible. You only need to register once to gain free, full access of the site.

If you would like more information about why we require registration, please read this letter from MaineToday.com's President.

What are the benefits of registration?
By registering with MaineToday.com, you are able to access the site and itŐs features. You will have access to all content you have enjoyed in the past. You also may elect to receive newsletters or receive special offers from our advertisers.

Is there a fee to use MaineToday.com?
Accessing MaineToday.com content remains completely free. However, in order to electronically access archived stories over a week old you need to pay a fee.

I already subscribed to MaineToday.com e-mail newsletters. Do I need to register?
Since our new registration system identifies users by a member name, we must ask everyone to register. However, you'll still receive our regular email newsletters if you are already signed up to receive them.

What is your commitment to my privacy?
We take your privacy concerns seriously. Our privacy policy explains our position on information gathering and how we intend to use any user data we collect from our users. In short, here's what we won't and will do: What we won't do:

  • Share your personally identifiable information with a third party without your permission. You won't receive e-mail from anyone other than MaineToday.com as a result of having registered. This is our anti-spam pledge. What we will do:
  • Help our advertisers understand our audience by providing demographic information in an aggregate form (which will NOT identify individual users.)
  • Send you occasional e-mails regarding account changes or benefits.
  • Send you e-mail regarding MaineToday.com promotions. You may stop receiving these by visiting your preferences in the Member Center.

For more information, please read our privacy policy.

What if the privacy policy changes?
This privacy policy is subject to change. If the policy is revised, a notice will be posted in the Member Center and an e-mail notice outlining the changes might be sent to you. All users of MaineToday.com may view the privacy policy, including any revisions, by clicking on the privacy policy link on the home page of MaineToday.com. If any changes represent a material departure from our current policy, they will be posted 15 days in advance of their effective date when feasible.

Will you disclose this information to anyone else?
We will not disclose your personally identifiable information without your advance permission except as explained in our Privacy Policy, or when we explained at the time of collecting the information the purpose for which the information will be disclosed, or when we deem it necessary or appropriate in order to comply with the law, to respond to claims, to protect our computer systems and customers, to ensure the integrity and operation of our business and systems, or to protect the rights, property or safety of MaineToday.com, its affiliates or others.

In order to describe our services to prospective partners, advertisers and others, we may disclose user information in an aggregate form that does not identify individual users. For example, we might disclose that a certain percentage of our users are female or within a certain age range or live within a cluster of ZIP Codes.

*What is your privacy policy concerning children?
In keeping with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, MaineToday.com will not collect or store personal information from anyone under the age of 13. Our registration system checks the age of new members and immediately discards any personally identifiable information that we may have collected from registrants under 13.

If I register, what e-mail will I receive?
As part of your member benefits, you'll receive a regular MaineToday.com Update informing you of new features, special contests and other updates to the site. You may also subscribe to newsletters from MaineToday.com or offers from MaineToday.com advertisers. You may start or stop any of these subscriptions by visiting your preferences in the Member Center.

If I register, will I receive any e-mail solicitations?
The only email you will receive as a registered user will be the MaineToday.com Update. The only e-mail solicitations we will send to you are the ones that you ask to receive. These e-mails are called "Offers," and are sent from MaineToday.com on behalf of an advertiser. You may start or stop your Offers subscriptions by visiting your preferences in the Member Center. There are several different categories of Offers; you must subscribe to and unsubscribe from each category individually.

If I subscribe to special offers, will you share my name or e-mail address with the advertiser?
Offers e-mail messages are sent from MaineToday.com; therefore we will not share your name or e-mail address with the advertiser.

Is it possible to continue to receive solicitations after I change my permission information?
Yes, it would be possible for a brief period. Your account information is updated immediately when you enter new preferences in the Member Center. However, there could be a solicitation already in progress that might generate an e-mail message after you update your preferences. This interim period would be short; it will not exceed 72 hours.

Will my name or e-mail address appear anywhere on your site?
Your full name and e-mail address will not appear on MaineToday.com unless you give us explicit permission to use them, or unless they are independently gathered and used as part of a news story. Your first name will be displayed on our home page when you visit MaineToday.com. We will also display your full name, e-mail address and contact information if you update them in your Member Center. Please keep in mind that the Member Center can only be accessed by logging in with your password. If you choose to post material to public areas of the site, such as a message in our reader comments area, be aware that your name will be visible to other visitors.

Why do I need to do activate my account?
We ask users to activate their account to confirm that the e-mail address they submit is active. This decreases the likelihood that an incorrect e-mail address was submitted by mistake or as a prank.

How do I activate my account?
After you register, we will send instructions to the e-mail address that you submitted. Follow the instructions. Account activation is easy. Basically, we ask you to open the e-mail, and click the link that is contained in it.

What if I do not activate my account?
After you register, you have grace access to MaineToday.com for the remainder of your visit. On subsequent visits, you will need to have activated your account to access MaineToday.com.

When will I receive the activation e-mail?
It is sent to your e-mail address immediately after you complete registration. You should receive it within an hour. To access MaineToday.com on your next visit, you must have responded to the activation e-mail. For the remainder of your first visit, you have grace access to MaineToday.com.

    Why didn't I get a confirmation e-mail?
Either the e-mail address you used for registration is a non-working e-mail address, or you or your ISP uses a program to block e-mail from all but trusted senders. All e-mail we send you, including the registration confirmation, comes from the e-mail address (memberservices@mainetoday.com). To register, you will need to add that address to your list of trusted e-mail senders.

If you have registered, and need us to send you another confirmation email, click here.

    What is a cookie?
Most standard Web browsers contain a feature called "cookies. "Cookies" are small pieces of code that enable us to automatically recognize you as a registered visitor when you visit MaineToday.com. This will allow us to instantly give you access to the site without you having to re-register or log in.

You can learn more about cookies on our (Learn: What's a cookie? page

    How do I log in?
If you are not logged in, you may click the "log in" link on our front page, or you will be prompted to log in. At that time, you need to enter your member name and password in the log in box.

How often will I be asked to log in?
To answer this, let us first briefly explain how registration works. MaineToday.com administers registration by using files called "cookies." When you register or log in, we place a cookie (Learn: What's a cookie?) on your machine; when you log off, we remove it. As long as the cookie is present on the machine, you are logged in.

We do not set the cookie to automatically expire, so there is no specific time when we will ask you to log in again. However, if the cookie is lost or deleted, you will be asked to log in again. You will be also asked to log in if you use a different computer than the one that you used to register, because it would not have the cookie installed on it.

I've forgotten my log in information. What do I do?
You may retrieve your member name and password here. They will be sent to the e-mail address you provided at registration. If you have changed your e-mail address, or no longer have access to the account, please re-register.

Why am I repeatedly asked to register?
MaineToday.com uses "cookies" to tell us who you are and to allow us to remember your password for you. If you are repeatedly asked to re-register or sign-in with our site, your Internet browser may be set to reject cookies.
