Happiness is...a mud puppy

blog polar dip.jpg

Peppered throughout my blog are pictures of my dog being all the mud puppy she can possibly be, and they are all very similar to the photo featured above. The only differences are seasonal. My dog is an equal opportunity mud puppy...if there is an opportunity she is a mud puppy.

We are just back from a walk in Evergreen Woods and that dog slopped through just about every melted puddle and waterway she could find, and she did it with sheer joy and ultimate abandon.

Now you non dog people (if any of you even read this) probably look at this photo and think, what a stinky mess. But true dog people see the photo for what it is.

Happiness.

Happiness for the dog and happiness for the person who just got to witness a loved one having a grand old time. No worries about the mud, the smell, the car interior, the floors or company coming. There was only the moment and I was smiling from ear to ear.

As a matter of fact, I am still smiling.

I used to see that same joyous grin on my Labs when they hunkered down in their puppy pool and played "Lurking Crocodile". Sheer bliss...

Happy is the dog who can enjoy being a dog. I have been reading 'Conversations with Dog' by Kate Solisti-Mattelon who answers such questions as "Is it pure joy that makes you ram and slam through the tall grass?" and "How do you feel about Dog Shows?" I recommend this book for dog owners who are more worried about getting mud on their floors or car interiors than understanding that frolicking in mud/snow/puddles is a great opportunity for fun for their canines. My English Setter had a cyst taken off his front right leg recently and he needed to have his staples in for over 2 weeks. That meant leash walking at all times and no romps even in our yard. Today he got his staples out and the green light for a run. We spent some time at our favorite park and he not only ran around like a race horse, but he also rolled around in the snow! Happy is the dog whose owner learns what they can about keeping their canines happy and healthy and who take great pleasure in doing so.

Your Charlee looks so much like my Kansas; I love the mud puppy photos. I can tell she's having a blast! I know Kansas would love to participate. I enjoy watching such antics among dogs, too! Especially since mine is currently an "only dog" and an apartment dweller as well. We do alot of walking, but maybe this year we'll finally get a house, a yard and a buddy for her. And find safe places to walk off-leash so she can enjoy plenty of mud, because that is true bliss.

I want to be a dog!
