Home hoarders
While sitting at my desk and contemplating blogging a "bad dog!" story that a client told me this weekend, I looked over to see my own dog participating in the very same activity.
Here again is a place where a sniglet is in order. I am looking for a sniglet to describe dogs who hide things in the house. My last dog used to leave biscuits and the like under piles of toys. She was partial to Lego Duplo's and she would fret when the kids played near her stashes. I even caught her tipping over the red bucket filled with Duplo's to feather her edible nest with.
Current dog likes corners and anything made of material that she can use as a cover. Minutes ago I caught her leaving a marrow bone under my daughter's old winter coat that she found in the basement in a give away pile.
For lack of a better sniglet, I think 'home hoarders' can be used to describe this not quite natural but all too common act of the domesticated dog.
For those who are wondering what my client's dog did that was so bad....
Lady the Rat Terrier dug a whole in her owners mattress to bury her stash.
Bad dog Lady!
Is your dog a home hoarder? Can you think of a better sniglet to describe dogs burying their booty in places other than dirt?

My dog Zephyr digs on the couch, on the carpet, and on my hardwood floors. She "dogpiles" treats, socks and my under garments(highly coveted)underneath the livingroom chair, under the couch cushions and behined the fish tank. And sometimes "dogaflages" (dog + camaflage) them behined my chairs and under cushions. If she thinks I'm watching her while she is doing this she will stop until I turn my attention elsewhere.

I have a 10 year old Australian Shepard named Keesha. Shortly after Valentine' Day I was vacuuming the sofa and found an unopened mini Reese's cup between the cushions. I went in my son's room to find the container opened, but not spilled out, with some of the contents missing. Sometime later I found two other candies in a corner by the front door. Several days later I noticed loose soil on the floor around one of the plants. When I went to repot it there were two Reese's cups burried in the plant pot. I've had dogs before that open the candy and leave the wrappers around. I guess she thought it was best to ration her treats. I only wish I had a hidden cam to see what she looked like doing this.

My 'Pomahuahua' Teddy is a cachestasher. He likes to hide specific toys the other dogs especially prize underneath extremely low pieces of furniture that only he (with his tiny paws and legs) can retrieve. I discovered that the wide ottoman he uses as his launch pad up to my bed has become the favorite site when I moved it to vacuum and discovered a bone, a puppy-sized Kong, a chewie chip and the fiercely loved (but completely disemboweled and bedraggled) remains of a stuffed teddy bear. I had a cat once that behaved like a magpie and was drawn to anything shiny. She'd stash her finds in corners and under furniture but they always consisted of silvery things (buttons, coins, scraps of aluminum foil, hair clips). She was very selective (and secretive) about what she took but promptly forgot about the items once she'd stashed them. I must have discovered at least twenty of her treasure piles over the years...

Donna, your cat sounds alot like my raccoon I used to occasionally let in the house, only occasionally cuz he was quick at this burying of shiny stash in the couch, chairs, etc. But the dog helped by immediately snuffling them out! Raccoon was named the sniglet "Kippy" for his play behavior being very kitten- and puppy-like. How bout "burash" for this behavior: verb: Stop burashing your shiny stash, or noun: I found another burash in the bed! Cheers, T
