Old Navy casting call for spokesdog
Pet Casting Call: A nationwide search is happening now through May 29
for a new "spokesdog" for Old Navy stores. In the late 90s, Old Navy
featured its beloved pooch, Magic, and now they want to find a new
Magic to star in their holiday 2006 advertising campaign and make
history. U.S. and Canadian dog owners can enter photos of their dogs
and a personality profile at www.oldnavy.com/magic or attend one of
four casting call events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and
New York City. Then a panel of celebrity judges including Katherine
Heigl (Grey's Anatomy), Alfre Woodard (Desperate Housewives), Malcolm
David Kelley (Lost), Kristin Chenoweth (The West Wing and RV), Betty
White (The Golden Girls) and dog trainer Andrea Arden will select six
dog finalists who will be showcased in more than 950 Old Navy stores.
From June 23 through July 7, people can vote for their favorite dog
star.

Hey, Nancy!
I wanted to let you and your readers know that while I think the contest is great, I found something I'm displeased with when I was browsing Old Navy's site.
They have a link to a game, the "Mutt-o-Matic" in their casting call pages that prompts visitors to chose two dog breeds and mix them in the "Mutt-o-Matic" to creat their own breed.
I am really disappointed in Old Navy in this regard. We all know how the designer dog fad is bad enough right now without major corporations jumping on the bandwagon, using it as a marketing ploy and, essentially "helping" the very thing us serious dog people are against.
I don't find it cute and I emailed Old Navy to complain and tell them so. I'm not attacking your post (and actually, I'm a bit embarrased, myself, since the message boards I help host also ran a feature article on this and I posted it in the section I host for kids before I found the ridiculous "game"). I'm still debating taking my own annoncement down, but I added a disclaimer to it in the meantime.
If your readers would like to speak out, I think it would be great if they followed the casting call link and clicked on "contact us/FAQs" and added their own two cents!
Thanks!

Interesting Jennifer. Someone wrote in yesterday and asked what I thought about puggles and I just haven't had the time to respond quite yet.
I also noticed on their site that the dog voting part was not working properly. When you click one dog, it takes you to another.

I've had some trouble with that, too. I can't get the "sort by name" to work properly. It doesn't alphabetize. Neither of the other "sort by" features seem to work, either. I wanted to search by name and there isn't a way to. One of the dogs featured resembles the famous Skidboot and if he's indeed entered, I want to vote for him because I think he deserves it, plus he's had the experience. Can't seem to find an easy way to find him, confirm/deny that, though.
I don't mind mutts that happen on accidents. I just don't like the irresponsibility of people who tout this "get rich quick" scheme by breeding dogs without assuring they're breeding quality, healthy animals.

Jennifer, my name is Barbara. I am Skidboot's "Mom". We too think that they have used Skidboot's image, but we have not authorized the use of his photo. He is not entered in the contest. If you want more information about Skidboot, see www.skidboot.com

Thanks, Barbara! I've visited your site several times prior to this and actually emailed you about the contest (got your reply, too). That's terrible if it is indeed Skidboot's image they're using. I hope you get that sorted out.
Side note: My email to the company about their Mutt-o-Matic game produced only a general, technical difficulties kind of reply "thanks for informing us of the problem. We're working on it."
Yeah, right.
