Quiz! What the heck kind of dog is Riley?

riley1.jpg

Meet Riley, a group Manners class member.

Riley3.jpg

Riley is 8 months old and he came from a shelter in Pennsylvania. He stands only about 15 inches at the withers, and weighs under 30 pounds.

Riley4.jpg

Riley is quite clever and quick. He can be a bit unsure of new things, but is quick to warm up. I just love that little guy!

Your mission, is to take your best guess at what breed he is and while you are at it, how about naming his breed? I am sure Donna will have a few creative ideas to get you all started. A few people, myself included thought he looked a bit like Carolina dog, but the color is wrong, and oh those ears! There seems to be quite a few dogs in there. My best guess is that he is a Cattle Dog mix, but his head is a bit Sheperd looking and there is no doubt he looks like a wild Dingo!

Your "what the heck kind of dog breed is Riley" comments are most welcome!

What do you think about...

I'm thinking cattle dog and Cardigan Welsh Corgi...

Cardistralian Heeler
or how about just Horgie

Does he have a Dogster page yet?
He's too cute!

A few people have written me privately and suggested a Corgi mix. I see that now, but I didn't think it in person and he doesn't have short legs or a long body. He is athletic and springy, looks as though he may enjoy agility.

Horgi-that is a good one! But I am thinking not very politicaly correct.

good one!
That would bring the head and ears, and color, but he is too small.
Maybe with a dose of terrier thrown in?

DINGO! Well whatever Riley is, he is one lucky dog to be rescued from an out of state shelter and find himself a loving family. Yay!
(okay now in my head I have the Bingo song, except that its saying D-I-N-G-O, and dingo was his name-O) make it stop please!

For a moment I thought I recognized Riley. Just yesterday I was looking on Petfinder.com and saw a dog that looked just like him and my search was specifically on the Australian Cattle Dog Breed. Check out Riley's twin (and those ears): http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7831839

I'd say a Cattle Dog mix. Riley is a lucky dog for sure.

A friend of mine sent along this link because Riley looks like my dogs twin! We got Bubba on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico last February. He is a Sato, which is what they call the street dogs that run wild there. We’ve given up trying to figure out how many breeds might be in the little fellow.

Looks like a basenji mix to me. The face is a lot like a basenji, the ears are similar and basenjis usually weigh about 20 to 30 pounds. No curly pigtail, though.
Nice dog!

I would say a Catapala, perhaps mixed.

Hi Jeanee, can you send a pic of what a catapala looks like? I looked them up online and couldn't find a pic. Thanks

I think Riley is a corgi- heeler mix. call him a chreeler. He looks almost identical to my dog , who I adopted from the Humane Society about a year ago. They said she was a beagle- heeler mix. Yeah right. Long live funny looking dogs!

Riley definitely looks like a heeler/corgi mix, though he got the heeler face. We have a corgi heeler, they look quite a bit alike
