Pet food recall bigger than reported

The pet food recall is bigger than originally reported on Friday. Only wet food is invovled, but Science Diet, Mighty Dog, Iams, Eukanuba and Nutro among others have been added to the massive list over the weekend. The best information site is over on the ever wonderful Pet Connection.

You can get advice from Dr. Marty Becker, find current list of foods invovled and report problems to the database.

Now go!

I hope this terrible event will help dog and cat guardians to think carefully about what their pets are consuming. No animal or their human companion should have to go through this horror. Whole Dog Journal has been an excellent resource for me over the years, and they carefully evaluate pet foods. No foods which contain food fragments, such as the wheat gluten in the Menu Foods products, make their approved list. Here in Maine, Green Acres in Bangor is an excellent resource for advice about foods.

Nancy's reply-
Thank you for writing. Agreed on all accounts accept for the following. Here is an exceprt from a letter from the WDJ. A Nutro product HAS appearded on their list.-

"So far, only two foods that have made an appearance on a WDJ "top foods" list have also appeared on the recall list: Nutro's Ultra and Nutro Natural Choice. The Nutro product featured in the 2007 list of "top wet foods," "Nutro Natural Choice Chicken, Rice, and Oatmeal" variety, does not contain wheat gluten and is not on the recall list. However, the Nutro product highlighted on WDJ's 2006 list, Nutro's Ultra Holistic, does contain wheat gluten and is on the recall list".

This whole thing sickens me. I strive to provide my dog with the best care in all regards. I chose a dog food that had only the best ingredients. Thankfully my dog is fine and we didn't purchase any of the tainted Iams canned food. We were lucky.
