More on the use of punishement with Dr Patty and the AVSAB

My inbox has been brimming with links from readers to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior Position Statement on
The Use of Punishment for Behavior Modification in Animals
.

While there, be sure to read the adverse effects of punishment.

I was just about to get around to blogging about their endorsement
of positive dog training, when Dr Patty Khuly over on the always fab blog Dolittler did it first.

I love it when that happens.

Saves me a ridiculous amount of time when someone says what I have been thinking and says it better than I could have.

Dr Patty reminds dog owners that the first rule of dog training is the same as that of Hippocratic oath:
"above all do no harm".
Hmm---seems I just said that last week in reference to "he who must not be named."
Must be true! She felt so strongly, she said it twice.

Fetch Dolittler's take here.

Just a little reminder-Positive doean't mean permissive.

Now go get yourselves a treat for trying to understand your dogs.

I am printing 50 copies of the article and giving it to the rescue I work with so she can hand it out to her new adopters!
